Well considering that Ghesquiere is still getting his berings in the menswear division of Balenciaga, this collection is, as Suzy Menkes said about his A/W 2001 collection, "totally original". I feel as if the whole Moroccan, neo-bohemian feel of the collection was a fresh breath from all of the synthetics and technical 80's re-vamp that is menswear SS 08.
Things I really loved about the collection:
1. The great liner notions the drapery of trousers offer
2. The impecable mesh of High and Low with fine mens dressings mixed with the gladiator sandal
3. The direct complexity of the layering without looking too bulky and wintery.
4. How concise the collection was. Ghesquiere is always good for this, and it seems as if he has a great sense for over-all themes without looking too synthetic.
Things that I wasn't too fond of.
1. The reiteration of long sleeves. I mean thinking of all the "fashion forward" cities this could possibly have the chance of being popular in all experience quite warm summers.
2. Coats. Jackets seem slightly sensible, however, coats I will not wear in summer.
3. A few issues of visual quality when it came to the silk shorts. There is a slight ambiguity when it comes to them. Are they boxers? Are they pajama shorts? Are they simply silk shorts? Nobody really knows because there isn't enough specific detail that can categorize them and that is why they read as out of place.
However, like I said, it is only the beginnings of the menswear line, and Nicolas Ghesquiere is quite a promising designer. Hopefully he will bring the menswear line into the same ranks as the women's without running out of juice.
