vogue.co.ukKARL LAGERFELD is relaunching his fragrance category with two new signature scents and, as ever with the designer, it's a truly hands-on project.
"The men's scent is really 100 per cent what I'm using for the moment," Lagerfeld said, revealing that he made spur-of-the-moment decisions when it came to developing the project. "I don't believe in projects that come together too slowly; having too much time is very bad. It's like cooking: Eat it when it's hot."
The fragrances, a Karl Lagerfeld women's eau de parfum developed by Serge Majoullier and Christine Nagel and a men's eau de toilette by Christophe Hérault, are launching in Harrods this weekend, followed by Macy's in the United States next week. Lagerfeld's first British store opens on March 13 on London's Regent Street, and the fragrances (the first since the now-discontinued Karleidoscope) look set to further expand his world domination.
The women's scent includes notes of lemon, peach, rose and magnolia and is represented in the campaign by Kati Nescher, and the latter includes lavender, mandarin zest, apple and violet leaves, and is fronted by Baptiste Giabiconi.
"When lavender is too basic, I don't like it," Lagerfeld told WWD. "Especially in the modern world, there has to be a kind of sophistication and not too much of a down-to-earth garden, flowery hot-house mood. That's from the past. There has to be a sophisticated twist in the perfume; if not, the old ones are better. The important thing with a perfume is to be new when it comes out and [then] turn into a classic in your bathroom."
Available at Harrods from March 9.
elle.comOn an unusually warm night in the heart of Paris, at the famed Palais Brongniart, people from all over the world gathered to celebrate the launch of Karl Lagerfeld’s first two fragrances—one men’s and one women’s—for his namesake brand.
Yesterday we learned all about the fragrance straight from Karl’s genius, hilarious mouth, and today, we’re delighted to bring you these almost entirely nude campaign images of Karl’s BFF Baptiste Giabiconi and German stunner Kati Nescher.
“We needed one boy and one girl. Baptiste and Kati were perfect for what I wanted to embody. There was no other options possible,” Karl said.
The designer shot the campaign himself in black and white and nude all over. The only attire? Studded fingerless gloves, of course!
Here’s what the models thought about shooting in the nude with Karl (and each other), the shape of the new fragrance, and being part of Karl’s crew.
How was the photo shoot for the campaign?
Baptiste Giabiconi: It wasn’t my first time being shot nude, and it wasn’t my first time working in this style with Karl. I thought it was fantastic to do this kind of shoot especially for a fragrance. The campaign’s sensual, sexy, bare feeling is exactly what the fragrance is all about.
Kati Nescher: I love to shoot with [Karl]. He’s the best. [Being] naked in front of the camera with Karl and the teams around me feels natural, especially with a good-looking guy like Baptiste!
What are you thoughts on the shape of the bottle?
BG: It’s beautiful, modern, really unique. It’s unlike any other bottle out there. It reflects Karl’s aesthetic, with its metal, which he always wears, and its square angles. There’s a glimpse of his personality, his precision. I think it’s an accurate representation of Karl and the person he is every day. In fact, I think we all carry a bit of Karl with us every day. It’s pleasant to hold in your hand, which is important, since it’s meant to be used every day, every night—whenever you want throughout the day!
KN: I think it’s perfectly made for Karl Lagerfeld: It has his face, beautiful angles. I mean, when I see the bottle, I see Karl’s style.
What does it mean to you to be part of the “Karl family”?
BG: It’s truly an honor to be a part of such a select group. It’s so enriching to be able to learn from him and work with him and his team on various projects. There’s always something new. He never does the same thing twice.
