Body Cages

Body cages are a bridge between armor/self-protection and underwear/exhibitionism. This strange interplay is an important theme for our times, and was reflected previously by the ever-popular S&M trends of recent seasons (latex, tough shoes, body-con, corsets etc.) Now all those trends have started to seem tired, but the ideas behind them remain relevant.
Nice post, Gasoline, you said it well!

Love this trend! love the allusions, ideas and contradictions they evoke. its like ribcages with the flesh torn off or corsets with their inner structure exposed, exposing and yet covering.
And fashions flirt with S&M is an interesting phenomenon by itself.

Great choice of song. I like how this thread is going off into such diverse but still relevant tangents.

To be honest, Balmain is not really what I would count as a body cage. It's just some wrapping around the body. I would call something like this a body cage:

I agree that those Balmain dresses were a bit of a stretch but they still present an element of an exoskeleton of sorts.

wow this look is really sexy, almost s&m. It kind of reminds me of some of the body con styles. I like it

I was going to look around for something of this sort, and I don't even know what to put in my search bar  Is there a name for this trend?

^That's an interesting point you bring up, I ran into the same problem. Try "Body Armor", that seems to be the umbrella term for this kind of design. I found some nice images, but I'll let you post the ones you like first, since you brought it up.

Done well this looks quite good, but I can imagine it looking quite trashy if/when it becomes commercialised.

It reminds me of... Xena, warrior princess. Or maybe her arch nemesis Calisto. In general, the female body armor on that show was very cagey.

I read once that women wore actual birdcages as their hats back in the 1700s. Can you imagine?
