is this common?, how does one catch the bacteria?.

RIP. poor girl. can't even imagine the mental and physical pain she must've gone through, at least she's in peace now.

This is very rare. It's a nosocomial infection, meaning that she probably picked it up in the hospital. If not, her system is likely to have already been weakened since this is a rare pathogen, that either infects in the unlikely event that it gets into the bloodstream (usually, this happens with a needle in the hospital) or because the patient is already in a very weakened immunological state (cancer, AIDS etc).
