Bringing back the sweatshirt as a fashion item

some of these pictures of sweatshirts just look like heather grey long sleeved tees.

i really like the concept though. i wouldve laughed at wearing a crewneck sweatshirt a few years ago. now im intrigued.

dark shadow has an amazing collection of thin fleece sweatshirts this season. the jackets have enormous hoods and long thick ties and the shirts have some subtle draping in the neck with asymmetric seams all over the place.

I like sweatshirts when they are worn not sloppy but more cozy creative.

I have enjoyed mixing in a sweatshirt into my outfits for a while now. The comfort and thinness of the American Apparel tri-blend pullover is especially good for layering. I have four now. I'll probably end up buying dozens more, I can't get enough!

I think a gray sweatshirt is essential. I started wearing them freshman year in high school, almost four years ago. They look good with jeans, dresses, whatever (as the previous pictures show). When buying, I think it's important to get a relaxed fit with the right length. The somewhat thin and slouchy fabric looks best.

I've always loved this.. I think it gives a great contrast when it's combined with something fancy, it kind of gives this effortless chic style when styled right

adore...i am afraid i have to agree with the above poster...
most of those pics are very thin sweaters...not sweatshirts at all

and it is a completely different effect to wear a CREW NECK FLEECE SWEATSHIRT..
*and for the person who doubted-*was it meg?
the YSL is indeed FLEECE...which you can see in the pic adore posted-though it's harder to tell from the runway shot...
:P

the american apparel pullovers that everyone is talking about seem really cute..
they aren't fleece though, are they?...
they seem MUCH thinner...
which i am sure is actually much cuter on...:P

a real thick fleece sweatshirt is a bit trickier to pull off in a flattering way imo...

*ie- i am sure that the far left pic in the first post is actually quite miserable to wear in real life...
it looks ok for the pic...
but i bet the sleeves of the sweatshirt are all bunched up and bulky under the narrow chanel jacket...
not the most comfortable thing to wear ...^_^...

i don't think the christopher kane runway look is very attractive or flattering..
very boxy and bulky in fact...:ermm:

but at least it's the real deal...and not some facsimile...

^ yes, the aa ones don't have any fleece at all. just jersey (their tri-blend, to be exact) in a sweatshirt shape.

thanks quimby...
that sounds like the best bet then imo...
you get the classic sweatshirt shape...with a slightly updated neckline and in a fabric that drapes the body in a more flattering way...

*clearly i am late on this one...
so many of you already seem to have jumped on this aa train...
gonna have to try to catch up...

:P

thanks for enlightening me...:flower:

welcome wiw.

Soft i'm not sure i understand your distinction between "sweater" and "sweatshirt". :ermm: it must be different in the U.S. here in australia, we have sweatshirts and we have jumpers...the terms are fairly interchangeable now, though i think originally jumpers referred to a heavier material, usually a winter garment made from wool, let's say, while the sweatshirt was sportier...cotton, etc...although now i dont think we make that distinction when we use the terms. "sweater" doesnt really mean anything here though. so i'm a bit confused  which pics that i posted don't qualify as 'sweatshirts'?.

it seems like you're saying that if they're thin, they are 'sweaters' not sweatshirts, is that right?. i've just never heard that distinction...then you used the word "pullover" and now i'm really confused

...sorry to be so specific dear...
but all the details make all the difference imo...
it's that sort of attention to detail that sets people apart...

here is a basic outline...
jumper and sweater is the same thing as far as i know...
sweatshirts...
these are traditionally made for athletic activities...
and are made of FLEECE...
that is the big thing..it is the raglan sleeve (the way the shoulder seam is diagonal)
and the crew neck (round neck) and the FLEECE (thick cotton that is regular knit on the outside and fuzzy on the inside) and the banded neck waist and cuffs...
and then that weird little V stitch at the neck...
NO hood...
a hooded sweatshirt has now gotten it's own classification as a 'hoodie'...

a pullover...well...
that is what it sounds like...and is basically something that defies being identified as either a sweater/jumper or a sweatshirt...etc...
like the aa tops which LOOK like sweatshirts but are a different fabric so cannot truly be called sweatshirts...

anyway...
anything that is cashmere, wool, silk...V nk...not blouson...not banded at the waist...etc...
those are NOT sweatshirts...those are sweaters/jumpers...
very classic...but not sporty...

you could fashion a sweatshirt out of silk or something and i have seen it done...especially in the 80's when sweatshirts were first styled as fashion items..
silk sweatshirts that had banded knit waists, cuffs and collars were pretty big at one point...

because you got that sport look but the silk was thin and draped nicely..
plus you could get all sorts of really strong saturated colour....
i remember going to a sweet 16 wearing a bright turquoise silk sweatshirt with a swishy polka dot mini skirt, tights and red patent flats (very much the christopher kane silhouette, but not so stiff)...

I love a grey sweatshirt... always have lol. Not long ago I got a grey & a black sweater that has the exact same details as a sweatshirt in the mens department at Target for $5.00. Theyre great & go with everything.

i love both the h&m and the IM...
...

i think the wider neckline is so flattering...
i really like these updated versions best...
that is one of the miseries of the basic sweatshirt....
you almost always have to take a scissor to the neckline or you look (and feel) like you are choking......

great stuff ...
thanks for sharing guys!
very cool...

B)

Soft {and sorry to be anal about this...} the IM 'sweatshirt' looks nothing like your definition of a 'sweatshirt'...?? and very much like a sweater....no fleece, not banded at the waist {well as far as we can see}, doesnt have a round neck, etc...

doesnt bother me...i think they're all lovely and at the end of the day that's what makes you want to wear something, right?. just wondering what qualifies as what in terms of posting in this thread....i wouldnt want to go on posting 'sweaters'...:innocent:

i've explained is as well as i can..
in detail...
so...
sorry if it's still not clear...seems really clear to me...

i don't know what more i could do to explain it...
sorry...:(

but of all the ones you posted ..
only three come close to being sweatshirts...
the aa one, the YSL one and the last one...
does that help?
