Cara Delevingne: ‘Getting Others’ Approval Isn’t the Most Important Thing’
By Cara Delevingne
I started modeling when I was 16. The odds were against me. At 5’8″, I was shorter than most girls in the business. Still, I gave it a shot, and like with most things in my life, I never gave up.

It took a while before I had stability in the business. I worked hard to be accepted by the fashion community in ways beyond my physical appearance. In no time, though, I found myself surrendering to the industry’s approval process. I felt like I needed validation from everyone. As a result, I lost sight of myself and what it meant to be happy, what it meant to be successful. I think it all stemmed from a deep-down feeling of wanting people to like me and love me.

When you do everything you can to make people happy with your work but there are still people who aren’t happy, you start to think, “Well, I’ve worked my a** off. I’ve done everything. I’ve pushed myself into the ground.” You just feel like you’re constantly disappointing others, and there’s this moment when you’re like, “Wait, what am I trying to do? Who am I doing this for?”

Over time, I came to realize that work and getting others’ approval isn’t the most important thing. Yes, your career is very important—but it’s not the most important. Of course I was proud of my accomplishments, but I wasn’t genuinely happy.

I was nearly 20 and had been modeling for several years. My vantage point had changed…and I had changed. I knew I had to reevaluate my life and my goals for my future. I didn’t want to resent fashion or my success. The process didn’t happen overnight, but it was imperative for me to preserve my integrity.

It’s taken time, but now I realize that work isn’t everything and success comes in many forms. I’ve opened my mind, and now I embrace new things with a childlike curiosity. I’m spending more time doing the stuff I love. And I’ve been able to do better work because of it.

When you’re coming from a place of living just to work, it’s never as good as you want it to be. It’s never as authentic. When you have balance in your life, work becomes an entirely different experience. There is a passion that moves you to a whole new level of fulfillment and gratitude and that’s when you can do your best…for yourself and for others.

I still have so much to learn, but I have realized that beating myself up, feeling guilty and regretting past mistakes will only hold me back.

After all, no matter how many people like you and your work, it doesn’t matter if you don’t like yourself.

I love her but the whole "I never wanted to model, I'm over it" story is old now..

yeah and the whole 'working hard' - um gurl, you got rocketed to the top instantly, and I'm sure being Joan Collins goddaughter and having Conde Nast connections had nothing to do with it.

Poor girl isn't being talked about so she's ranting and complaining again... She really stopped modeling a year ago, she should move on and stop talking about the same things. There are more important issues in this world Cara.
Did she really work that "hard" to achieve what she's done? Her connections really helped her (Christopher Bailey, Karl Lagerfeld...) and the fact that she hung out with big celebrities (Rihanna, Harry Styles) really got her known by non fashion lovers. And the rest is history, her career skyrocketed thanks to social media.

It does feel like a publicity stunt given that she's spent the last couple of months pretty much off the radar.

However I think it's unfair to say she didn't work hard. Regardless of industry connections and money etc, she did a long stint as an ASOS girl, walked a hell of a lot of shows in her early seasons, and put in the hours to shoot editorials and campaigns, plus travelling, you know she didn't control the set or the work. Unlike some models who are big because of their social media, she was a decent model and her huge following came off the back of her work and personality, it didn't create it. I saw the Cara-mania in action in Paris and that was some scary sh*t, fans and paparazzi just mobbed her. I'd be pretty unhappy if I felt like I had to be "turned on" all the time to deal with it.

Chanel Eyewear S/S 2016 by Karl Lagerfeld

Chanel has recently unveiled a video teaser for its new eyewear campaign for spring/summer 2016.
The full ad campaign, which was shot by Karl Lagerfeld, will launch in April.
Model Cara Delevingne stars in the teaser video ad for the new SS16 campaign. The British It-model and actress sports a backwards cap and a pair of over sized mirrored mask sunglasses in the video. The sunglasses feature a quilted pattern laser-engraved on the lenses, a nod to Chanel's signature design element.
In related news, designer Karl Lagerfeld was tapped by Paris Opéra Bastille director Benjamin Millepied to design dancers' costumes for the Opera's "Brahms-Schönberg Quartet." The George Balanchine-choreographed piece is set to debut for summer 2016 (July 2 through July 15).

Why is she still doing stuff for Chanel? How can she complain about modelling and then have a new campaign out a week later?

I'm really tired of her trying to bring such a bad rep to our industry essentially, most of us here. And where she got all her followers and fame and money.

Love the second and fourth shots, Cara at her best! I don't care if she's just an actor now, I hope she keeps up the good work whenever she does it.

That hair in the latest candid pics looks similar to the Marc Jacobs FW16.17 hair... campaign?
