Carey Mulligan and Shia LaBeouf have said goodbye to their romance, PEOPLE has confirmed. The Transformers star and the Never Let Me Go actress, who were first linked in August 2009 after being spotted kissing at a New York restaurant, called it quits "some time ago," according to sources.

Since the split, Mulligan has been in Los Angeles shooting the indie film Drive, opposite Ryan Gosling. She checked in to the Best Western Hollywood Hills Hotel for a few days while the film shot nearby.

I wonder how long "some time ago" is, because they were just spotted making out like less than a month ago.

Us magazine's source says Tom and Carey are not dating

Their romance started on the set of the Wall Street sequel, but there’s no happy ending for Shia LaBeouf, 24, and Carey Mulligan, 25.
"It just wasn’t working," says a friend of the actress, who flew to London after the September split and is now back in L.A., filming the indie Drive.
"She's strong," adds the pal. "She'll be fine!"
As for reports that she has moved on to fellow Brit actor Tom Sturridge, a source tells Us they're just pals: "He dates a British model."

I heard some things about them at the premiere from someone who went and it all makes sense now. Shia basically ignored Carey for most of the night and he didn't even attend the after party with her, so I'm sure the breakup happened either that night after the premiere or at least a few days or so after the premiere.

....I'm kind of hoping they'll work things out and get back together. But I doubt it since I read somewhere that this isn't the first time they've broken up. So I am sure it is for good this time.

From breakup to inseparable

It appears they are.

Carey Mulligan has split from Shia LaBeouf. She is living at a budget Best Western. She’s been seen in and out of the place with Tom Sturridge. He was with her after the Hollywood Awards the other night. They left together in a cab. Yesterday they went grocery shopping. She drove.

You know I have always loved her. Now I love her even more. Because they were saying she was all boo hoo and sad. They were painting her as That Girl. That Girl who mopes from a broken heart. And she decided to answer them with a hot new hook up.

What? Me? Wallow? Never.

Why would you wallow with cute Tom Sturridge around? My girl does not wallow. At least she wouldn’t let us see it. Shia on the other hand, well, he might be wallowing. He should be. I heard that at the end he was a sh-t to her. More details later. For now, just know, she never wronged him.

It would be nice to see Tom Sturridge in more movies though. And this small detail is why I’m not entirely 100% convinced that he and Carey are a legitimate couple just yet. First because she’s so fresh off her split, but also because there’s such great potential for some favour sharing here. It’s what friends do for each other. Not that it wouldn’t be so cute and adorable and amazing if it were actually true, but this is Hollywood right? You have to at least consider the possibility of a plan.

I liked her with Shia, but I also think she looks adorable w/ Tom. If only he'd shave...

Weirdly enough...I found Carey more interesting when she was with Shia.
Tom and Carey are boring. Who is he? But it makes sense for her to date
someone more low profile. However, until I get some real evidence, I'm going to
assume Carey and Tom are just friends.

She didn’t beg when he called it off, having supposedly pre-warned her that he’d only be into it for the duration of their professional attachment. That’s what some over there are saying caused the split, and while she was surprised, taken off guard, it wasn’t like she took her time leaving anyway. There’s also talk that she supposedly recently changed her email and her number, and tellingly informed everyone BUT him. I could see that, non? That he’d be the type to call in the middle of the night and f-ck around with your head? And not in a John Mayer way either. It’s just... Shia really, truly, can’t figure it out.
