In its first designer collaboration, Express has tapped Celia Birtwell to design four limited edition minicollections. The first will appear in stores April 7.

(from wwd)

So Limited Brands is getting on the the diffusion craze. Took them long enough! i also think its kind of risky for them to stick with one designer for four collections. and i think they also could have gone with a bigger name.

Celia Birtwell delivers romance to Express

CELIA BIRTWELL -- the British printmaker behind the legendary Ossie Clark -- is bringing her style to the States with a line of dresses and blouses for Express, the store's first-ever designer collaboration. And you'll want to mark the line's April 7 debut date: When Birtwell did a similar cheap-chic collection for Topshop in Britain, it immediately sold out.

Birtwell's romantic designs helped skyrocket the career of Clark, her late ex-husband and the designer who dressed Twiggy and Marianne Faithfull in the late 1960s. In February, Clark's label was revived on the London runways, but it lacked Birtwell's participation -- and critical acclaim.

The Celia Birtwell for Express collection is true to Clark's style: fluid and sheer, with the flora and fauna that are Birtwell trademarks. A breezy red blouse is covered with Lily, one of her best-known prints. Floating Daisy, her famous psychedelic swirls, appears throughout the line.

Clark often used patchwork, a tradition Birtwell continues. The bodice of one dress is splashed with bold flowers, and its billowy sleeves are scattered with delicate buds. A '70s-style blouse mixes a lightly checked necktie with, yep, more flowers.

The collection will be carried in select stores, including at the Beverly Center, South Coast Plaza, Glendale Galleria, Brea Mall and Del Amo Fashion Center outposts. Blouses are $79.50 and dresses are $128 -- not cheap, but far less that the $7,895 that a 1969 Ossie Clark original is fetching on EBay.

ooh, youre right!

apparently its only going to be in the top 100 stores in the states (dont have wwd subscription so i can't tell for sure)

im hoping there's going to be a similar print to the celia birtwell for topshop dress daisy print that keira knightly was spotted in!

i think 128$ is a bit too much...but i will snap up something on sale for sure.

express is always overpriced for what they offer, this is just even more so. Still, I am interested to see them in person

thanks lucy92 for the preview..going to check it out today if i have time.

i went to express today and they had all the blouses, but not all the dresses. wasn't wowed by anything and the quality definitely doesn't justify the price.

finally , express finally loosened , most of their designs are very dull and monochromatic which gets boring and their prices are ridiculous , at least at topshop , it might be pricy but everything is unique.

lucy, thanks for posting the pics.
i like the red blouse the most. they are all cute prints, but i think they are a bit pricey for express. i'd definitely pick up some if/when they hit the sale rack.

Finally got a chance to see this is person...
I find it rather stale, tbh...
Esp. at those price pts...
One would be better off finding a nice piece of vintage Clark/Birtwell, rly..

i haven't seen these in person...
but i think they look great...
much better than the topshop collab...

:p

and especially since the ossie clark label has been re-launched..
these are quite a steal compared to those...

:innocent:

i thought they were really nice and they are better than the topshop ones , more modern but with retro appeal. The price is way too high , esp for something made in china.

looks nice in pictures
i'll try to check it out this weekend

lucy...Express hasn't been a part of Limited Brands for almost a year now, just wanted to clear that up.

I can see why it would be fetching the prices that it would, but it is way out of the realm of many people, myself included. However, when it hits the sale racks, it will go like hotcakes (since Express clearances are second to none).

i saw this in person this week and thought the quality of the dresses was excellent. the blouses less so....

but i WILL be buying come sale-time

i went to the store and tried on two blouses...
the fit was awful on me...beyond bad...:(
and the cuffs on the shirts were made really poorly...just looked cheap and crappy...
i've seen better at h&m and uniqlo and even target... for 1/2 the price...

and i think the dresses are just plain F-ugly...:yuk:

FYI-
the whole marketing is a bit misleading with them imo...
there is NO belt...
that is sold separately

oh- and when i went ...the dresses were 25% off...
apparently no one is buying them......
