AMERICAN GRAFFITI

Keith Haring and Basquiat get a t-shirt resurrection.

UNIQLO has corralled Phillip Lim, Gareth Pugh, and Cloak into making lines for the mass market brand, and also snagged student artists around the country for help with their ever-changing t-shirts.

Now the Japanese wonderstore goes one step further, reproducing drawings from Basquiat and Keith Haring on a new series of tees.

Both artists were prominent in the downtown art scene of New York in the '80s, and both have their roots in graffiti - Haring's iconic angels stamped brick walls across the city, while Basquiat's challenging and sometimes lewd epithets and illustrations were a hallmark of the East Village and Soho. They were colleagues and sometimes collaborators, working together on performance and installation pieces at the avant garde art collective, Studio 57. They died 2 years apart, Basquiat in '88 from drugs and Haring in '90 from A.I.D.S complications.

But despite their early departures, their fan list continues to grow into a new century: After amassing devotees like Andy Warhol, Blondie, and Madonna, the artists will be celebrated by the actress Chloe Sevigny, who appears in UNIQLO's advertisements for the project...and will soon appear somewhere else (wink, wink).

Look for them in April.
