Chloë Sevigny loves labels. Not just Prada, Lanvin, Chanel but also the little white ones that read "green snakeskin D&G" or "belts and suspenders" that pepper her closet in the Manhattan apartment she shares with her boyfriend of seven years, musician Matthew McAuley. "I'm really into the label maker," says the self-described "obsessive compulsive" star with a laugh.
Another passion? Vintage clothes, an affinity Sevigny, 32, nurtured growing up in Darien, Conn., where she frequented thrift stores with her mom searching for pieces inspired by her childhood idol—Mary Ingalls. "Little House on the Prairie was my favorite show. I would only wear calico print dresses, and I actually slept in one of those little nightcaps!" says Sevigny, who dons similarly chaste ensembles as Nicki on the HBO polygamy drama Big Love, which wraps its second season Aug. 26. In contrast, the fashion plate says her offscreen style is "a little eccentric. I always like something that is a little unusual." But the quirky fashionista has her boundaries: "I avoid all polyester". Inside my closet from People.com in 2007
When talking about Chloë Sevigny presentations are quite unnecessary. I find it clearly in trouble in a few lines to summarize what is perhaps even a voluminous monograph could tell. The summary then, you know, is not my forte. Better to leave the floor to you, Chloe designer than that for the second time he picked up a pencil to draw a very special collection for an equally special shop in New York - even if the "Store" is an understatement, since more than anything institution - that last year it launched the first exclusive line unleashing a real uproar, thanks to the successful mix of prints Liberty and New Wave influences. To learn more about this second collaboration with Opening Ceremony and understand what has changed since that first very successful experiment of 2007, we made small talk with her.
Hello Chloe, what is keeping you engaged in this period?
I'm keeping busy trying not to do anything! In ten days he returned to work on the set of a TV series that I filmed in Los Angeles. Work from ten to sixteen hours a day, five days a week. So until I get back there, try to rest as much as possible, to relax and spend time with my friends here in New York.
Turning your career in fashion, the success of your first collection for Opening Ceremony was not at all a surprise (for us). You've lived like?
In fact I had not realized that the collection would be sold in so many countries. I think this is something like twenty-seven countries, which is difficult to imagine for me ...
And beyond the numbers, what is the thing that gives you more satisfaction?
The most pleasant thing ever experience as a designer for the entire Opening Ceremony is certainly when I meet girls on the street wearing some article of the collection. E 'priceless!
But not with this Opening Ceremony was your first experience in the fashion world ... The first foray was with extraordinary Imitation Of Christ and goes back a bit 'of years ago. What are your memories of that experience?
Actually I have not had much to do with the design from Imitation of Christ. It was more like a work of assistant publisher and ... now goes back many years ago. However working with Imitation of Christ has been very stimulating. I loved to join.
How did the collaboration with Opening Ceremony? Who chose whom?
Actually that's what happened: I was quoted online by "Fashion Wire Daily, which reported my statement that said that if I had ever collaborated with another fashion label I would have liked it to be Opening Ceremony. Was born around just like that! The opportunity presented itself a little 'for the case ... on the other hand I think it was a pretty natural fit for both.
For this second season you have chosen to devote time to menswear, designing mostly male leaders then possible decline in female version: how would you describe the aesthetic and mood of the collection?
The new collection has a lot to feel "back to school." I wanted to have a classic look and a little 'preppy, but with urban influence. Just think of the Shetland golfoni with fantasies realized, however, in shades of black and gray. Things of this nature. The jacket of the closet that you stole your brother and now it's your choice. The idea is a bit 'that.
You are considered an icon of style and have always been a close relationship with fashion ... how do you think has shaped? What are your first memories related to fashion?
My personal relationship with fashion began since I was a very young child, perhaps even since I was in my mother's womb. Also, my parents have encouraged. I had a basket full of bizarre costumes, body of any kind and elegant dresses. I remember spending a whole summer wearing my bathing suit to Wonder Woman ... I refused to take it!
And now who are your favorite designers? Who do you admire the work?
The list is very long: In Paris I like what Nicolas Ghesquière for Balenciaga ago, the work of Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garcons, and that of Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, Olivier Theyskens and again, Yoji Yamamoto and Stefano Pilati. In New York I follow Miss Prada Proenza Schouler and Milan, who I admire enormously is a remarkable woman and I love what he does in the fashion, lifestyle and art.
Read fashion magazines?
I stopped to buy: I find that do nothing but cause anxiety and strange complex about my body. I make an exception if there are photos of Lara Stone in love with her!
You are also skeptical regarding sites and blogs, or you happen every now and take a look here and there?
The only website that has anything to do with fashion that looks and style.com: I always use to tell you about events to which I participate. It 'a great tool!
To capture the look of your first collection for Opening Ceremony I chose a very good photographer Mark Borthwick: the choice of who has fallen for this season?
The new lookbook has a taste very different from the previous one. I collaborated with David Armstrong and with many artists, such as Aurel Smith, Jack Peirson, Slater Bradley. I like my fashion photography should be very heavy on fantasy.
What are your favorite photographers at the moment?
My favorites of the moment include Mario Sorrenti, David Simms, and Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin.
Designs a collection for a store that is an institution where ... You love to shop around the world?
Wherever you find me in the world do I find all the local vintage shops and flea markets! Thankfully there is internet, which makes everything much easier!
