Snap Happy: Flipbook Fun With Chloë Sevigny By Nicole Schlomann
chloesevignyflipbook1.jpg

Ever the busy bee, Chloë Sevigny has just finished up her latest project—a photobook for her Opening Ceremony Spring/Summer '08 collection. Curated by Sevigny and shot by photographer Mark Borthwick, the book features a slew of interactive photos of Sevigny dolled up her latest creations (many inspired by her high-school style icons). Mixed with the shots of a gingham-and-floral-bedecked Sevigny are transparencies and illustrations by artists including Marika Thunder, Rita Ackerman, and Lizzie Bougatsos, creating a fun little flipbook that lets you make images of the already strange and ethereal actress even more strange and ethereal.

As Opening Ceremony co-founder Humberto Leon told New York Magazine's The Cut, "You can flip all the clothing around. Its goes from mini little Santa Claus to wearing Chloë outfits…It's a cool little book." The upper and lower halves of the pages are split, allowing the Sevingy's torso to flow into a picture of a psychedelic shell. As with her collection, the mixing and matching possibilities are endless.

thanks so much blushing ambition, for those guardian scans.
i was gutted when my copy made it's way into the recycling!

wow. she looks amazing with that orange lipstick. like really... who can pull of orange lipstick, ever.

What did they do to her lips! They weren't originally orange, and she wasn't wearing that much make up. Eek!

In comparison to this image, the lipstick looks terrible

She looks much nicer with a natural appearence

so is that image of her with more make up photoshopped?
scary!
I kknow that everything is edited to within an inch of it's life, but I wouldn't have guessed they added to slap on the computer!

i do love a bit of orange lippie, though.

love those candids :)

Chloe Sevigny: Still Kickin

There is life yet for Chloe Sevigny's Opening Ceremony collection.
While on Topshop, we came across their new Post-War Precision collection (originally called the Valerie Collection, though we don't know why they changed the name). Topshop describes it as "1950s pin-up styling with a rockabilly twist", but between the checkered pieces, acid wash jean jacket and ditsy floral print dresses we thought "We Wish We Were Chloe Sevigny" would have been a more apt description.
Just take a gander at these high-wasted checked pants. Remind you of anything? We thought so. Similarily, this blouse by Topshop is almost an exact replica of one Chloe turned out for Opening Ceremony (although in the picture it's shown in floral, Chloe also made one in basic white), one of the more wearable pieces of the collection. And these tiny floral printed shorts are very reminiscent of Chloe's floral skirt. Topshop even went as far as a floral bustier, one of the more signature pieces from Chloe's collection (ps. we're still not sure who's buying these). [Editor's note: Natalie loves Chloe's floral bustier!]
The Topshop stuff is actually really cute (thankfully, they stayed away from midriff baring tops) but our reaction was overshadowed by the same sneaking suspicion we had when we tried the items on last March in Opening Ceremony, or maybe it was last April and at Urban Outfitters. Either way, we're wondering why, amidst less than positive reviews, the Sevigny collection has had such a strong influence on retailers.
Perhaps Chloe was on to something, but it's a shame her designs are being copied more often than worn.

^So true about the Topshop floral bustier dresses, saw them today and definately reminiscent of Chloe's design. Really sweet though.

Thanks lemeray for the candids, she looks great, especially her hair.
