One of my favourite collections of all time by Gianfranco Ferré.
“Ascot-Cecil Beaton”
Created to evoke the 'freedom of a masculine- feminine charm', 'Ascot Cecil Beaton' was Gianfranco Ferré's first haute couture collection for Dior.

Inspired by the Edwardian high-society style of the costumes Cecil Beaton created for the 1964 film My Fair Lady (directed by George Cukor), the collection paid particular homage to the film's central scene, set at Royal Ascot, in which men in sharply tailored grey tails and matching top hats mix with women in white floor-length lace dresses trimmed with black bows and ribbons to watch the horse races.

For day, Ferré chose to contrast 'austere masculine fabrics tweed, barathea, flannel, Prince of Wales check - with exquisitely feminine white blouses in silk, voile and organza' and to play with 'the fluid charm of kimono sleeves', all in a palette of grey, black, white and beige.

For evening, the designer presented an abundance of floor-length dresses in silk faille, duchesse satin, taffeta and shimmering organza, embroidered with interlacing pearls and gems, flecked with gold and silver, or adorned with cascades of flowers - roses, lilies of the valley, country garden flowers and ivy - in turn pinned, printed or embroidered.

A triumphant Dior debut for Gianfranco Ferré, the collection was awarded the prestigious Golden Thimble prize the same year.
