If only dreaming could make it so, then Rei Kawakubo would have the world (or the men of this world) living la vie en rose. She cast her fall show with long-haired, seemingly sleep-deprived, androgynous models and dressed them up, doll fashion, in a medley of pinks—from their sneakers right up to their rose-colored sunglasses.
Despite the ubiquity of one hue, though, Kawakubo wasn't out to challenge any ideas about gender with this collection. She was more interested in wry twists—T-shirts printed with images of the Pink Panther, necklaces festooned with crosses and plastic fuchsia soldiers—that sometimes turned heavy-handed. The prints, which married Scandinavian-style graphics and florals in Pantone hues, were delightfully eye-popping and straightforwardly joyous.
