Thank you. Add in Elle as well. And this was all BEFORE she started dating the Jonas brother. In fact the W cover was part of their new 'Royals' group, a lineup which included Tracee Ellis Ross. People have been throwing Priyanka's name around as a prospective Vogue cover star around the same time in this very thread because she had a build-up. Just like the digital Allure cover. So it's a bit surprising to hear she's only getting the cover because of her relationship. It's so diminishing. That line of thinking is toxic, sorry. And you're insulting Anna's intelligence by making it look like a Jonas brother would actually feature in her life. Also, let's not forget that Priyanka Chopra was actually a household name in her native country prior to Hollywood. So there's that career too. Still doesn't matter? Ok then.
I'm sure if Blake Lively had married Ryan Reynolds at the same time she booked her Vogue covers the consensus would've been that she got the cover due to that as opposed to just being Anna's pet.
Sigh.
I believe you yourself have said on these forums that certain actresses aren't deserving of a Vogue cover just because they've covered other magazines, so yeah. Priyanka, prior to today's announcement, had yet to land a major prestige cover by herself. The W and Elle were shared covers with other stars and I'm not impressed by the digital Allure cover either because if they really wanted Priyanka on a newsstand cover they could've given her Lily James or Janelle Monae's covers from earlier this year.
I can think of one actress in particular that you've shot down as being a Vogue cover subject who has had
multiple solo covers of Glamour, InStyle, Marie Clare, Elle and Allure and swap out a shared W cover for a Vanity Fair solo cover, so yeah.
Priyanka only had anticipation of landing a cover because her name has been in the press so much the past half year because of Jonas. She wasn't getting as much press for that movie she had out earlier this year with A-listers Jim Parsons and Clare Danes (/sarcasm). That's just a fact.
Also, I'm sure you yourself can agree that Anna has made choices over the past few years that have diminished her/the magazine, have had you scratching your head and have probably lead to many cancelled subscriptions so I don't know if that argument holds up.
Same as the Bollywood argument. I don't know how successful her career was in Bollywood because I don't live in India, I live in America. So for Priyanka to appear on an American cover, she needs to be relevant in America, not just India/Bollywood.
Let's just say that, if we follow your line of thinking, there are a ton of black actresses (Gabrielle Union or Nia Long for instance) that should've had covers because their films/tv shows were successful in the early 2000s. Even Tracee with Girlfriends. Never mind the fact that those films/shows weren't 'mainstream', they were successful but those actresses didn't get covers. So just like Priyanka had success in Bollywood prior to America, it wasn't 'mainstream' American success so we surely can't say her past work in Bollywood qualifies her for a cover today.
And lastly, speaking of Blake (even though her pedigree is slightly better than Priyanka's - her tv show was a hit that lasted for 6 seasons, she worked with big directors like Ben Affleck and Oliver Stone and she got a Chanel and Gucci contract while Priyanka has no major house contracts nor major projects with big directors) I did stand up for her previously saying she put in the work with what she had to get her covers too (which is why the Reynolds argument doesn't stand - she had covers prior to meeting him. The only cover he might've had some influence in helping her land was Blake's last).
So I'll do the same for Priyanka. She put in the work with what she had (a big machine, a wedding with yes, a Jonas, I doubt she would've landed the cover if she were marrying a fellow actor from India, for instance, novelty as a Southeast Asian actress) and made it work for her. So good for her.
