They are not in it to be nice, they are in it to make money. When you start making big bucks for them, they can be extremely nice.

Model_mom, why can't they make money and be nice ? I mean being nice doesn't cost anything...

Soemone else on the boards said major treated her terribly:shock: ! I'm far too afraid of them now- I'm aiming for Trump, New York, Next, Ford, or Marilyn- they're all short girl friendly! IMG too, but I get the feeling that place is the Holy Roman Empire, and eventually, they have to fallB) .

But for guys, I suppose Major and Ford on the very top!

Next - short girl friendly ? Never heard it before... Aren't they known as the ones who only want perfect people ???

Time is money the next big girl might be waiting on the phone or just outside the door. If you're not making them money then your phone won't ring, you won't be invited out to lunch and your pics won't be in the major magazines. It's the way the business is. There are nice people in the industry but they have to answer to the head of the agency and the pressure is always on them to produce the next it girl/guy. If you do run into a nice agent that believes in you then you are extremly lucky because she/he will do everything they can to help you out.

I belive you are talking about Major, DNA, or Women. Filipa Hamilton is with Next, and she is (supposedly) 5'6. Also, Next has a thriving commercial models section, and commercial models average at 5'6.5 in height :flower:

off topic, but i just love this thread, very useful

bring all the crappy agencies in girls (&boys)

I completely understand they are a business and act like one. I was rather refering to the situations described earlier in this thread about agents swearing or telling girls things in a really nasty way...

I really don't know much about New York agencies. I mean all I know is what I picked from this board. I certainly remember someone mentioning that Next is extremely picky and "only wants perfect people". I can't say if that's true or not myself, though :flower:

Model Agencies are very tricky. It seems that in this buisiness there is the 5-second rule, which is if you dont appeal or stun them in any way in the first 5-second having contact with you, they probably wont look further into you and you will be discarded. I'm not choosing sides here, but you should cut the agecies and the people that work there some slack. Everyone doesnt always realize that this is a viciouse, competetive, and blunt business, in which if you dont act fast, wise, or strong enough you will fail. The people at the agecies see hundred of girls EACH and every day, especially the big guys like IMG, DNA, Women, etc. its not always easy for agents while constantly being under stress, pressure, and on time, to be nice to every single girl. It is nearly, if not, impossible!!

Agents are human beings too, they sometimes have bad days, sad days, and stressful days, and they do get pissed off:innocent:. In the end it depends on you personally (if you suceeded in stunning them, or that they see something worth-while in you), how the agent is feeling (if theres a lot of pressure, stress, whatever), and just the day to day situations. Again, I'm not trying to choose sides here, but I myself have encountered some N-A-S-T-Y tempered people, but I always try to remember that there probably was a time where I wasnt feeling as happy-go lucky and nice either, so I guess its not entirely their fault as well. But for all those bad expiriences there have been countless wonderful meetings, conversations, and smiles :D .

P.S. Yes Roman is very sweet indeed. I had ne of the longest conversations and meetings without any interruptions with him ^_^

I'm not talking about being a "nicey" all the time, more like about not being rude or, rather, not making a particular effort to be rude as some situations described earlier in this thread look.

And, I also must say that I think people have a tendency of idolizing everything to do with fashion and modeling in a way and therefore tolerate and even find excuses for things they would never tolerate nor excuse if those things were by any other business. I mean if we talking modeling is a business as any other, it must be applied all the same standarts of judgement, to be fair.

ditto, glamourising modeling is bad.. but so is to be a 'slave' model..
bookers and scouts should treat models with full respect and vice versa..
unfortunately not too many bookers respect all models in their 'stable' which can be rude and -to some girls- even painful (and i'm not talking emotions only)

thats why being a model is such a hard job, takes so much more than just a pretty young face and a very thin worked out body.. as far as bookers/clients go, personality is Top priority. From my experience, i seriously understand that in a 'new model' social skills and attitude is so much more important than looks.

So true model mom. The girls go through agencies like a revolving door. There's very little nurturing a girl to greatness anymore. Sad really.

Yes, I know that your not talking about them being nice to models all the time, but most frequently the times that they are rude, and blunt to the models (potential or their own) thats the time that is most frequently pointed out (Its like the news.....they dont like to report on the positive and good stuff much, while you see so many stories about murder, accidents, and so forth everyday because thats what people are going to talk about). Yes, some of the agents can get worse than nasty (Steph's was Extremely nasty) and I was almost reduced to tears myself, but I guess thats what one has to be prepared for once in a while in this buisiness. as I said before, it all depends on the person, the situation, and how its going for them. You can catch even the most sincire person in a bitchy, yelling mood:P .

Yes, I do agree with you that many times the fashion industry is idolized by outsiders, because it is thought to be this extravagent, no-problems, money and happiness filled place. But in reality, its like every other buisiness. There is a boss, the employees, the big-players, and those who are just there for a short period of time. I have also seen pretty nasty behavior in business enviorments, law firms, and even doctors offices. I guess everything has a bad side to it and is not always peachy-keen. I do also think that modeling , even though is a business, seems to be a buissines within itself. You cant really compare it, since there are almost no business where so many beautiful women, so much money, and timing is riding on. Whenever you have a mix of power, stunning females, oodels of money, and power-hungry people things will not be as normal compared to something else. I guess thats what one has to deal with if being in the fashion industry. In a perfect world, all the same standards would be applied, but since life is obviously flawed you should not count on it.

By the way, I loved all your points ^_^

Women was very nasty with me when I met with them. They called me back on my photos I sent in(surprisngly) but when I met with them they complained to me about how my legs were way too long for my height and that my hair was too long and stringy looking(that upset my mom to no end). I was very upset after leaving there because I met with them first that day and it kinda put a damper on thigns for me.

You know ... it is blunt ... the way agents and bookers talk to the girls. But if you are going to make it as a model ... you must get used to that. Your body, face and hair is the product and if it doesn't meet the standards that they need ... they will tell you, almost every time. Clients do it too ... and if you make a fuss or tear up every time a prospective says something negative, you won't get sent on casting calls anymore ... and that means no work. A model must learn to accept that she is not perfect for every job and realize that they will get more no's than yes's.

You must learn to listen and see if there is anything you can change for the next time. And then try again and again and again. Of course, you can't shorten or lengthen your legs, but you can learn what shoes can give the illusion of shorter or longer legs. And you can have your hair trimmed and conditioned ... maybe colored ... to make it look thicker and healthier. Things like that can help. If no one tells you, then you can't get better.

i do think there's a great variation in niceness and nurturing amongst agencies. we've worked with people all the way from wilhelmina and ford down to the scuzzy agency in a random garment district building. the wierd thing is, the models from nicer agencies generally have much better things to say about their agent than the models from really low tier ones. it's like the small agencies have an inferiority complex and feel that they have to be really bitchy to prove their validity...one thing i don't like about some small agencies in new york is the way they talk about their models-- like pimps...

The cliche is that the modeling industry is "a bunch of sharks", isnt' it?

So I guess be prepared for all of the agencies and what they will and will not do...

I don't know how much truth is in that saying, because "shark" implicates that they're out to get you and use you up, when in fact agencies deny more people than they accept, and you put yourself out there to be used. They aren't forcing you into anything.

If anything, the harder you try after you get denied would make you the shark, since you're persistent and out to get an agent.

Yeah, no kidding, I'm 5"7.5 and Next Toronto refused to book an appointment with me because I wasn't 5"8.

As for a really nice agency though, Elmer Olsen in Toronto is a good one. They told me I was too short and commercial very kindly. :D
