Daniel Lee - Designer, Creative Director of Burberry

I spoke with a model during a go-see last week (she was an exclusive for Lee’s final BV collection… assumably a muse of his) and she exclaimed that the upcoming Burberry collection is pretty epic. Her opinion may be a little biased, but the news got me excited, nevertheless.

I have actually stopped buying BV in anticipation of Lee's Burberry... I was going for BV knitwear, blazer, and other things, but I finally prefer to wait and see what Lee is offering (and Phoebe Philo next september).

I didn’t realize his debut is tomorrow. I thought it was going to be during the spring/summer fashion week, but I guess I mixed Daniel’s and the new Gucci CD up.

Anyway, I am very curious and looking forward to it. I’m always up for « new » fashion air.

I haven't realized it either! So soon. Pretty exciting .

A piece on Stormzy's Met Gala Look:
STORMZY’S MET GALA BURBERRY ‘FIT WAS A NOD TO LAGERFELD’S CHANEL

WORDS BY TAYLER WILLSON

This year’s Met Gala was a pretty low-key affair, when it comes to menswear at least. Low-key, however, isn’t necessarily a bad thing not least when you’re rolling in low-key Burberry.

That's exactly what Stormzy did when he attended fashion’s biggest annual event in New York City on May 1, where the theme of the night was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. Make of that what you will.

“For me it’s really important that Stormzy shows up as himself but stays on theme and I feel we really nailed that with this look,” the rapper’s stylist, Melissa Holdbrook-Akposoe, exclusively told Highsnobiety.

“We made reference to Karl’s time at Chanel by using a floral print that leans towards the iconic Chanel camellia flower, but we did it in Burberry blue.”

Since Daniel Lee’s arrival at Burberry in late 2022, things have been shaken up somewhat. In a bid to rediscover its Britishness, the house has a new logo, new designs (including the Burberry blue), and a host of new British talent from across various industries.

For Stormzy, who was a regular wearer of Riccardo Tisci’s Burberry (including at last year’s Met Gala), Lee’s arrival at the brand as their new chief creative officer is a positive move both on a personal and stylistic level.

“It’s been sick working with Daniel so far. We’re building a friendship,” Stormzy explains. “I feel like he really knows me. He sees me. He knows I like to look clean but he injects it with his creativity. He’s a genius!”

Stormzy was a part of a ten-strong Burberry entourage to take to the Met Gala. Alongside familiar brand names like Skepta, Liberty Ross, and actor Jodie Comer, there were other notable celebs wearing Lee’s new-look Burberry like Mary J Blige, Burna Boy, and Dr. Dre.

So, how did Stormzy's team go about differentiating his look from the others and, in turn, continue to honor Lagerfeld's work and designs?

“We nodded to Karl’s personal style with the sleek boots and sharp tailoring,” Holdbrook-Akposoe explained. “We even used some jewelry because Karl was big on it, although it’s something Stormzy never really wears. I always try to push the boat out when it comes to the Met.”

Pushing the boat out seems to be pretty compulsory when it comes to the Met Gala, although this year was a little more subdued than most. Regardless of the strict dress code (one that, admittedly, stretched as far as Jared Leto wearing a giant cat costume), Stormzy’s here for it, albeit a little star struck.

“The Met Gala almost feels like a night out with the best people in their respective industries,” he said. “I get mad excited to see everyone and update my celebrated selfie album because I’m a real fan of a lot of the attendees. I’m always looking out for my faves to give them their flowers and take a pic.”

The boys were in blue for the 2023 Met Gala

WILL LENNOX 3 MAY 2023

Karl Lagerfeld, a man who was immediately recognisable for his signature white hair, black sunglasses and fingerless gloves, led a more colourful life than his uniform suggested. For the 2023 Met Gala, themed in his honour, attendees took to the red carpet wearing outfits that traced the diverse inspiration of Lagerfeld, and the impact he had on the fashion landscape.

But for many of the men on the red carpet, dressing in Lagerfeld’s honour would have been too restricting in black and white, instead choosing to add a splash of royal blue to their looks.

Daniel Lee’s new vision of Burberry has been well-documented as bringing out the best of the Brits, but as the English invasion descended on the red carpet, even some of the homegrown talents couldn't resist the allure of azure.

This is perhaps the first proper outing for Lee’s fresh take on Burberry, and at the Met Gala his electrifying new colourways did not disappoint.

Barry Keoghan, whose sartorial wardrobe has already proven to contain many colours, adopted the new tartan of Burberry, one with an eye-catching shade of blue, criss-crossing across the suit. Worn over a matching turtleneck, Keoghan rounded out the blue with a rosette and brooch—inlaid with a blue stone.

Grime has cemented itself as the birthing place for some of fashion’s most innovative dressers, and leading the charge are rappers Stormzy and Skepta. The two also had takes on Lee’s blue, with Stormzy choosing a rose print jacquard suit with another turtleneck underneath, this time in deep black.

Skepta brought out one of Lee’s most memorable prints from the debut show, the all-over duck print, swapping out the turtleneck for a matching tie and button-down shirt. Not content with just a suit giving the blues, Skepta was wrapped in a woollen blanket decorated with the new Burberry logo.

But it wasn’t just the British rappers talking blue, Nigerian rapper Burna Boy combined some of the sartorial sensibilities of the other rappers, but still mixed things up in his own way; wearing his shirt open, revealing the slight shimmer of a stone-encrusted undergarment, and a scarf in matching print wrapped around his neck trailing behind.

New Packaging with the "Burberry Blue" accents:

BURBERRY

Daniel at the 2023 Met Gala with Jodie Comer!

Love the fact he chose Jodie. Her dress looks quite good too!

I guess it's official now that Burberry Blue is the new Bottega Green.
It was quite a good showing at the Met amongst the sea of black and whites. Very recognizable.
With the 4 menswear looks, I wonder if it's any indication about the (renewed) importance of menswear for Burberry.

They were going for an Yves Klein blue as the new Burberry signature, which, as much as I loath this person’s design, is a fantastic shade of blue. But the collateral and packaging is hilariously pathetic. Looks very mass outlet/discount:

Very difficult to see any type of timelessness with such a harsh color. It will date his Burberry unfortunately.
We see how quickly Blazy moved on from the agressive green.

I like the people he is associating his Burberry with but the dress on Mary J Blige was a disaster.

Yes, please! Anything to erase Tisci's horrid streetwear era! He has caused so much damage to the brand.
Jodie did look gorgeous but I think compared to others it felt a bit tame. Maybe because everyone else went over the top.
The menswear doesn't make much of a statement either. There are 1001 different outlets doing dapper justice and quite frankly we've been seeing these printed suits from frumpy Sarah in many iterations. You can't throw a suit at men anymore and assume they'll be happy. Jonathan has completely changed what menswear is about right now.

He shouldn't get too caught up with trimmings! I always roll my eyes when designers get fussy over trimmings. Less time on logos, and more on the clothes and accessories please. The prints on the sole? That's completely unnecessary not to mention unsustainable.

Just for the record, I don't see anything wrong with the logo in fact I quite like it. Very minimalist and modern, and that shade of blue is a favourite for the fashion and art crowd. A win all round.

that shade of blue reminds me of that mcqueen show with the eye dress, specially when paired with black. i wonder what it has to do with burberry

It's not IKB because it is patented but indeed it's very close.

While I liked Tisci's Burberry, he was most definitely miscast. Burberry isn't the type of brand to doing edgy, fashion-forward collections. They're closer to a British Berluti/Brioni.

The printed sole is quite a stupid design in truth. Any floor that has the slightest texture would scratch of the paint. For example, customers who buy and wear Louboutin have to get the soles repainted on a regular basis.

They obviously trying to recreate Bottega Green here, but the shade of blue used isn't too bad of a colour, quite neutral and versatile actually. Bottega Green is more offensive in terms of its loudness.

When it comes to brand colours, lots of them will either stick to a neutral or go for a desaturated colour. It's mostly done to avoid the branding clashing with seasonal offerings.

The only bright brand colours that I see having longevity is red (considered to be a classic), Tiffany Blue (doesn't clash with the mostly gold/silver offering) and Shocking Pink (Schiaparelli is weird enough to get away with such an odd loud colour).
