Dario Vitale - Designer

i pre-ordered the printed items. The fabrics are quite substantial. I managed to try on/feel the clothes during the Shanghai preview. The quality is there! I’m sure it’ll decline the moment Prada intervenes fully, but I have to give Dario props for sticking to consistency

Even though Dario only had one season, he made much more of a impact than Sabato etc.. The campaigns, the clothes, the world building, it’s quite impressive. As excited as I am for Pieter, I wished Dario had another season to work on before getting ex’ed.

If Prada is trying to take shortcuts with quality, why would they appoint Mulier? He doesn't strike me as someone who's willing to compromise on quality.

Well, 7 out of 10 times, the CD does not have a say in QC. Especially in Italy, there’s a large disconnect between the studio and factory. From my own personal experience as a ex customer of Prada, this disconnect became a lot more noticeable when they hired that bald guy as their CEO (I forgot his name) I noticed the quality decline when he came on board.

Also, Alaia/Richemont is a lot smaller in comparison to Prada. The larger the maison, the harder it becomes to control QC + everything else in the supply chain

This is so interesting - is there a large customer base for Versace in Shanghai?

Honestly, Donatella selling to Capri was the worst business move she could have ever done.
Technically no…Because she sold it to the highest bidder and considering that Allegra got the most shares in the company, it’s actually the best business move she ever made as it is the one that allowed her to get personally, the most money.

Not the best for the legacy of her brand but tbh, it could have been worst…

To be fair, this is the most exciting Versace has been since Gianni.
To be fair, Versace post Donatella’s rehab was rather exciting. In 2006 Versace had a slow and real resurrection. It took time to translate commercially but it was exciting, fresh, forward thinking…

It’s always been off and on. But the recent Dario drop actually sold out before reaching the sales floor, mainly from the menswear side. Someone at the preview commented that the new Versace is like Miu Miu’s queer brother (in a good way) as a lot of the pieces are quite Miu Miu centric (can be layered, mixture of textures etc)

Prada is simply too expensive for what it is. If you’re in China/HK a lot of the RAF runway pieces end up in the outlets (even then, it’s still very expensive)

On the contrary, since Dario is ex Miu Miu, if you can’t afford Miu Miu, Versace (now) has similar offerings

In my industry, the people I deal with in China, mostly Beijing and some other cities in the north, what they prefer is still quite conservative - Chanel, Dior, Hermès, and their children Miu Miu, Céline. It's very interesting for me to hear about Shanghai. I have to visit again soon.

^ Outside of Beijing, there aren’t really any northern China cities that people associate with luxury fashion. Once you go beyond Beijing, you mostly run into desert regions or large heavy industry cities like Harbin, Jilin, Shenyang, Hohhot etc — places with very harsh/continental winter. They tend to attract mostly domestic tourism and aren’t the kind of markets luxury brands are particularly interested in.

Shanghai is the big global cosmopolitan financial capital of the country so culturally like the New York/Paris/Tokyo etc of mainland China.

The buys there are generally more daring. If you are looking for runway pieces or exclusives without pre-ordering it’s one of your best bets. There are a few Nicolas LV items that I wanted that I only ever saw on the racks there.

Im excited to see how someone styles this collection for an everyday look

Why do I keep seeing instagays and fashion pages on instagram mourning about him getting axed off and praising his POV but no posts about actual purchases?
His POV might have been focused and strong, but with those prices...the competition is tough.
With 1,5k silk shirts and 3k leather bags people will lean towards the more trendy Miu Miu, Alaia and AAA players like Dior.
Remember for the past two seasons Versace had leather bags priced below 1k!

It’s only going to get more expensive once Pieter steps in. (That’s my justification at least) 😂

The instagays in China at least.. the ones I know including my brother, did buy from the preview. I’m not too sure about the west..
