Demna Gvasalia - Designer, Creative Director of Balenciaga

New here. Demna is one of my favorite designers and arguably a huge influence on my own contemporary art practice. The combination of dystopia/critical theory and graphic design/anti-graphic design in the postmodern sense is probably what draws me to Balenciaga substantially and I probably have the most designer objects from this house. (Gucci second and Fendi/Chanel/LV are next in my collection although looking to add Loewe/Celine to my list...)
It's not that deep

I don't know that much contemporary art, but from a fashion perspective he is very influential in youth culture since his aesthetic is very easy to copy in mass market production. But I doubt he would be able to exert the same influence without the prestigious name of Balenciaga and the Kering's marketing machine.

I would recommend a good and thorough read of this tome: roland-barthes-the-fashion-system.pdf | Are.na to comprehend what I am grasping at.
What are you grasping at?
It’s interesting to see how fashion like demna’s can inspire a contemporary art practice. By all means I’m happy you’re inspired. But if this inspires you, I’d recommend checking the people that inspire demna, like the artists and designers he curates around his shows and campaigns.

Yes been super duper excited to research a lot in fact... I still am fascinated by Sterling Ruby's foray into fashion and moving to LA was one of the most beautiful and polarizing decisions I ever did in my life. Apart from my studio art MFA track, I hope to revive my experimental fashion label again this year. I am grasping at a contradictory and playful yet very sober look at a world where fashion should not be a distraction from worries and turmoils but a torn type of approach in an environment being destroyed by climate change slowly or where wealth inequity has gotten much worse yet we must continue to have our love for fashion be onward.
