Designers Switching Houses & Moving to New Brands

Virgil in at lv!!!

Virgil’s appointment was just confirmed by BOF

PARIS, France — Virgil Abloh, the Off-White designer who came to prominence as Kanye West's creative director, has been appointed as the next artistic director of men’s wear at Louis Vuitton, one of the oldest and most powerful European houses in the luxury business.

The appointment, widely rumoured in recent months, follows the departure of Kim Jones, Abloh’s predecessor at Louis Vuitton, in January. Last week, it was announced that Jones would become the men's designer at LVMH-owned Christian Dior, replacing Kris van Assche.

“I feel elated. This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start," said Abloh in a statement.

The designer confirmed the appointment early this morning by posting a picture of a Louis Vuitton monogram trunk with the initials “LV” to his Instagram account, without a caption.

Stay tuned to BoF as this story develops.

Since the source I heard the Virgil news from was also right about the Kim Jones move, I’ll throw one more rumor out there; Kim Jones wants to also take over Dior’s womeswear and Maria could be headed to Fendi.

But I just said in another thread that Fendi was the one house where Karl actually does good, never Chanel really. :o And while I could never picture Kim Jones at Dior, the brand is going more and more into a 'youth/streetwear' direction and apparently it's selling really well. So I doubt they'd want to change it up anytime soon.

If you'd have told me three years ago that Maria Grazia Chiuri would be this sought after I'd have laughed in your face!

Seriously, if MGC actually goes to Fendi, i'll stop buying Fendi everything the minute it is announced.
I don't know about the state of Karl's lifetime contract but i hope that he will have at least some names to suggest to Delphine Arnault.

The Fendi HQ and design studio is in Rome. MGC was based in Rome for many years when she was working for Valentino. It sounds plausible she wants to return there. To be honest, I think Fendi would suit her much, much better.

I've never been her biggest fan, however since people without actual design skills seem to be getting creative director functions in the big houses, Fendi could be off worse.

^Plus, Silvia Fendi will be around. So she will not be alone doing her D-list collections. MGC is the type of designers who needs to be in a duo. This woman by herself is a hot mess. I don't want to deny her past success because she used to be at Fendi with Pierpaolo for the accessories and Valentino has been a huge success when she was there too. Dior is just not for her at all.

Regarding Karl, it is better to have a slow and stable transition then to wait his last breath in order to take some decisions.

My concern is about Kim taking womenswear. Did he ever design a womenswear collection ? What type of women he could have in mind ? I am not skeptical at all, just very curious.

Why to Delphine? Chanel is privately owned.

i would actually welcome MGC at Fendi, I think that would be a perfect duo and I don't think LVMH will want to let her go. She won't take a lesser role now going from Valentino to Dior.
Her success at Dior however isn't solely down to her, Raf started to make a B-line for millennials early on and with the transition between him and MGC she has maintained that connection with the consumer. The brand has so much more growth in it to become as they wish, in line with LV.

I see Virgil being a somewhat non-starter, I can't see him lasting that long. (or at least I'm hoping not).

Haider Ackermann has left Berluti.

Very surprised and saddened by these news because I loved what he did there. Some of the most luxurious, tailored to the T, sharp clothes you could get these days. I hope they weren’t the ones who let him go because that’d be stupid.

that's weird. things seemed to be going well for haider at berluti.

might he be headed to lanvin? lmao, *i wish*

That would be really cool! I think it would get him out of this creative funk he's been in for a few years.

According to a strong rumor reported by WWD, Kris Van Assche is set to go to Berluti.

That is a clear indication of the Direction LVMH is taking. Haider really introduced a more laid back and casual vision for the house and Van Assche will take it further.
He left after 3 shows! Only one of his collections has performed in stores! This is insane!

I loved what he did and MAS did a wonderful job with the styling.
One thing is sure, Haider can use this Berluti experience to his own advantage. When Rick Owens left Revillon, he started to do furs for his own line. Haider can introduce a less trendy proposition for his menswear.

Tom Ford and Hermes don't have to worry anymore...
At least this menswear season will be very exciting.

In just 3 seasons, Haider made Berluti cool and relevant without forcing people to remember he's there. I'm gonna miss his Berluti.

Do people even care about KVA? He used to be excellent in the beginning but he's a bit has-been if you ask me.

I don’t know why they are trying so hard to make him happen, like why?
