Designers Switching Houses & Moving to New Brands

I would love to see Fabio at Gucci tbh.

You think studio directors make that much money? If Chanel is gonna pay 5M for a CD, considering Prada group is not known for being too generous, I doubt he was being paid over 1M per year 👀 Maybe I’m being naive.

As far as I know, design is not very well paid… seniors can be around 70K in some brands, so the 1M would actually be a lot.

Junior designers in Italy, in very good brands, get around 30K…

^ Once you reach senior (and sometimes even mid) positions, designers (at major brands at least) get very very well paid. I know of some shoe designers (with some commercially successful hits under their belt) making over 1M a year, so imagine an established Design Director at a major brand...

just a shoe designer making 1M? To me that sounds like a lot. Usually management gets more money and I don’t know anybody in any brand making 1M 🫣

Could be maybe in LV or some mega brands like that… but I don’t know, seems quite out of the market tbh. It’s hard to believe for me.

In Italy for sure a junior starts around 25/30K, then after 5 years they can be around 50ish/60ish…

Edit: just checked with a friend of mine working for top brands in Paris, with 8 year experience designers get around 50K.

Design was never a well paid job unless you get top jobs, and they are more in the 200k/300k range.

^ Are you talking about designers, or other positions that are part of the design studio (modelistes, etc)? Because there's quite a gap salary-wise when it comes to that. All of my designer friends (they range from mid to senior) working for brands that belong to the big 3 conglomerates make waaaaaay more than 50K / year; no matter if they are in RTW, LG or shoes. Where you work is definitely a key to a good salary...

But why not Gucci ? He comes from Prada group like Cantino.

One of the rumours said that Fabio wasn’t hired as CD of Gucci due to his signature “intellectual” style which wouldn’t resonate with idea of Gucci at the time. I believe it’s for the same reason they won’t hire anyone from Prada group. Also Gucci as we can see at least for now is not replacing SdS whereas BV will be without CD in about a week. So I assume Vitale is being prepped for BV.

Miu Miu is hardly intellectual; it's a cocktail of all the current viral micro-trends.
With the new CEO, Ancora guy won't stay forever, it's now or never to scout talents or else Gucci will end with 2nd-tier prospects (another time).

In the current state of fashion “intellectual” means thick librarian style of glasses. Gucci is stuck with one 2 trier CD and? As far as we’re aware is not going anywhere until end of his contract. If Gucci really wanted to sacked him they would have done that after this disastrous show in London.

Considering what Fabio did for Prada/MiuMiu accessories and Alaia’s accessories, it’s indeed reductive to see him with that prism.

He has a real understanding of classicism, innovation and quality.

Most brands today are focused solely on selling. Balenciaga has thrived on marketing garbage, but Fabio doesn’t fit in this era of fashion. In a perfect world, BV would be ideal for him, but Kering would never allow it. Just look at Alexander McQueen—they went the obvious route and chose the worst kind of designer. Chances are, they’ll do the same with BV. They should have learned from the Matthew Williams disaster at Givenchy, a prime example of how not to steer a brand. If the rumors are true, Blazy is smart to leave—Kering will likely ruin BV eventually.
