^ That's right- they're for skinheads and punk rockers!!! You would never see Gordon Gekko (Chuck and my own spiritual leader) wearing them!!!

Oh, Boomer, you're so sensitive when it comes to male fashion! :p

I know- blame it on working for Ralph Lauren- we actually had training manuals about these things, so that we could educate the poor, unwashed, huddled masses, yearning to breath free (i.e.- men who have no idea about proper dress, which is just about all of them...!)

^^That's really cool, I would love to know what you know. But, alas, many details are completely lost on me - such as the difference between the types of suspenders.

^ True- but don't get me started on button through cuffs- which is my main obsession...And I'm happy to say, Chuck Bass understands compeletely!! Ed, (remember Ed?), wears them almost all the time! B)

LOL, Ed usually wears his shirts with rolled up sleeves, I can't even remember an instance when he wore a shirt with discernible cuff situation!

^ No these are on the suit jackets- not the shirts...!!
You can almost see it here- the buttons should 'kiss' and there is an actual buttonhole so that the jacket cuffs can be opened..It is a very custom touch, only found on the really good men's suits (there is huge labor involved and most tailors don't even know how to do it...) I know- who cares, but Ed may be the only young man who shows these things for many years, and being from London, where most of the best tailors in the world are, I like to think he understands!! ;)

Oops! I told you I was quite ignorant when it comes to male fashion, so don't you roll your eyes at me!

Thanks so much for the explanation, it's so fun (and educational) to read. :flower:

Oh, sorry, I wasn't rolling eyes at you- it's just my fashion obsessions, which I fully understand are ridiculous!! The big thing is a sport coat or suit jacket has to almost always be custom made or made to measure (they are not the same thing) to have button through sleeves because the length of the sleeve couldn't be changed as on a ready to wear jacket- so it indicates some big time tailoring! I noticed that Ed (Chuck) almost always has them, which means a lot- and, he usually has them when you see him in candids out and about on his own, although of course those jackets could be courtesy of Gossip Girl, too! ;)
Now then: regarding his french cuffs.... *screams from everyone!!!*
I'll stop now...

Boomer, just keep the wisdom from the Ralph Lauren manuals coming! It's really interesting, I would love to read those. ^_^

I was just joking about this little guy  He's actually cute!

^ Ah, you guys are sweet..! But I do think this is one of the things that makes Ed, the Chuck Bass character and GG so interesting- how many shows would go to this kind of trouble to present the details of a character and present a particular world; in this case the UES prep school and society crowd? I know very little about the women's outfits, but the menswear is very well done- you could walk into RL on Madison Avenue or any number of high end shops and see lots of things from Gossip Girl! I love how Ed has set a whole new standard for college age men- fascinating... ;)

^ That is true. He dresses very very well.

I dont know too much about mens wear which is why I agree with Luthien. This is something new to learn for us :)

verrehhhh interesting. Not to mention, suits are soething men look good in.

well, most men.

^ Yup, and his are really well tailored- fit is key for these sort of things.... And Ed got in much better shape after the beginning of the series- you can see it in the trim cut clothes he wears!

^^Yeah, you can really tell that Chuck's outfits are of the highest quality and perfectly tailored. I appreciate the attention to detail that Eric Daman puts into his work on GG, it's what makes some of these characters iconic. I mean, how many times have I come across (for example) tweets saying ''Today I'm channeling Chuck Bass'' or ''I'm dressed like Chuck Bass today.''

wait, i don't understand this, care to explain?
you're like suits professional!:heart::flower:

^ Well, I kind of was at one time...:D
See, the sleeve is like this:
menssuitworkingcuff.jpg

(From Atailoredsuit.com)

It goes back many years ago when a coat was worn for everything and gloves could be tucked under the sleeve to keep one warm...It is now a status symbol of custom suits- and of course, Chuck Bass is there!! :woot:
The really cool, or arrogant, thing is to leave the last button undone- showing off that the button holes are real...! I am pretty sure I will find a picture of Ed with that look someday- he is British, you know!!

ooooh! now i get it! you were referring to "hidden button holes" that are inside the sleeves! i thought you were referring to the shirts and their ankle buttons, silly me!
thank you so much, i get it now!

one more question, since you're an expert obviously , where does one tuck his braces when they go "under", by the buttons sewn into the waist of the pants or?

sorry for such dumb questions, but i've never realized there's a whole interesting concept behind it, i've never put much thought in it, tbh. :(

^ We'll probably get yelled at for being off topic () but:
The leather ends of the suspenders (called braces in England) are flat and have button holes in them; high quality men's suit pants almost always have flat buttons sewn into the waistband on either side in the front and two in the back and you button the suspender ends to them...The major advantage is: you don't wear a belt so it is more comfortable, especially when you sit down; it doesn't pull in and bunch up the waist, and you can actually adjust the suspenders a bit to raise and lower the slacks, so that they hit the tops of your shoes at the proper height (especially if you're a fanatic like me....)!
This is my main complaint about Ed's clothes: somewhere in the last few years it became hip or stylish to have these hideous bunched-up slacks around the shoes- why Eric goes along with this I don't know...it looks awful and is not at all proper... This suit is either Ralph Lauren Black Label or Gucci, I am pretty sure, and all but perfectly fitted except for the damned bottom of the slacks!!
