Eliminating Sugar From Your Diet

I try and get rid of all the refined sugar in my diet and replace it with fruits apples ect. ect. My skin has improved but if i eat chocolate then i might break out eek! it is only difficult for about the first couple of days then you are over it.

I find that since I've been completely off sugar for a couple of weeks, I've become extremely sensitive to even minor amounts of it added to things like tomato sauce and even bread. It just seems unnecessary.

I tried to cut out sugar from my diet for a couple of days now...i don't know what happened but I had the worst break out ever!! My skin is so awful now :(

I've been on the Clean cleanse for 3 weeks now. No sugar (refined, white/brown, honey, maple syrup, high fructose corn syrup. evaporated can juice, etc). Not sure if it's the lack of sugar in my diet, or the absence of other things (not allowed dairy, eggs, cheese, wheat, corn, alcohol, coffee, potatoes...the list goes on), but I feel great.

The idea is to remove anything toxic, or that you may be allergic to, from your diet for 21 days and then reintroduce foods slowly (and one at a time) to see which ones cause adverse effects). I can highly recommend it if anyone's interested.

so what do you eat exactly?

Here's the list of approved foods...and ones you can't eat on the program...

When you're on the cleanse you have a smoothie for breakfast, food from the approved list for lunch, and soup or a smoothie for dinner. You can also snack as much as you want on any approved foods.

thank you!! So how many days does it last? and why can't you eat soybean products and oranges and banana? sorry about all these questions!

NP. The cleanse itself is 21 days (plus 4-5 days beforehand on the elimination diet, getting your body ready). The foods on the exclude list are either "toxic" i.e. full of additives, can cause allergies, or adverse effects (bananas for example can cause mucus, acid, and constipation).

The book that goes with the program is great and has masses of info...Clean by Dr Alejandro Junger. You should check it out.

I read it somewhere that sugar causes ageing...

Absolutely! And not just of the skin. Its called glycation and causes cross-linking of protein in skin and all throughout the body. Which results in tough, wrinkled connective tissue in organs like brain and heart too. Who wants an ugly pancreas, right?:yuk:

Not only high blood glucose levels, but cooked food at >100ºC can lead to glycation. One solution: raw diet eliminating high GI foods.

Can anybody tell me if these mueslies are ok or the sugar in them is bad?
It says no sugar added on the package...
Here's the list of ingredients:
wholegrain oat flakes
wholegrain wheat flakes
wholegrain wheat

rice flour
bits of dried dates
sunflower seeds

sweetener: maltitol syrup
bits of dried apples
fructooligosaccharide
bits of dried apricots
sweetener: isomalt
unhydrogenated vegetable fat
freez-dried slices of figs
wheat flour
freeze-dried raspberry bits
barley malt
salt
flavourings
corn starch
malted barley and wheat meal
emulsifier: mono and diglycerides of fatty acids

The whole list looks suspicious. Imo, it would be easier to say what isn't bad on it (sunflower seeds, apples and figs. apricots probably have SO2, unless they are naturally brown). They don't have *added* sugar in them (altho maltitol is a nasty sugar-like sweetener anyway), but oats, wheat, rice contain starch that gets broken down into those nasty glycation causing sugars.
I always wonder what is vegetable fat anyway, is it sunflower? Soy? Too mysterious.

I eat according to the LCHF(low carb high fat)-"diet" and it has really changed the way I look at food. It's a diet that involves cutting out everything that's sugar and carbohydrates (max 5g carbs per 100g) and getting your energy from good fats instead of having the highs-and-lows-style energy that you get from carbs. It took a few days to shake my sugar-addiction but afterwards I felt amazing. I'm never hungry, I eat delicious food and sleep better than I ever have in my life. I really recommend it to everyone!

I was on a 'no sugar' diet for 3-4 months and my skin didn't get any better.

That sounds great, Mimi! What are your 'staple foods'?

Well anything that's protein and fat really  ! For breakfast I usually have bacon and eggs, lunch and dinner is chicken/fish/meat/seafood with veggies and lots of cream/sauce. If I want to snack I eat things like berries, cheese and ham or really dark chocolate (minimum 85%). The most important thing is to avoid sweeteners (bye bye diet coke) as they make you crave sugar more.

you can find all the details on this page http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

^ I really need to try this. I've been experiencing massive sugar cravings lately, and have been gaining the flab that comes along with giving in to them! :P

I've eliminated grains, I'm not giving up a little bit of chocolate now and then. It's all about the glycemic load really and what your body can handle.

Did you eat dairy products and/or meat ? Ive been a vegetarian for years and recently switched to full vegan and my skin improved dramatically. Perhaps thats an option for you as well! Let me know if you need any more advice :flower:

Lately I've been finding that yoghurt is really great at calming my sugar cravings. I've always found it super satisfying. I just had a bowl of full-fat Greek yoghurt with a few chopped plums and it was like desert!
