Eliminating Sugar From Your Diet

i've done it for two months now. i had cake for my father's birthday though but i dont want to be too strict. its ok to have cake for a birthday! its not difficult if you eat food that you like and if you plan your food. if you are starving you will be tempted to eat the thing that is quick to eat and it is in general junk food.

Good work! Yes, it's true once your body gets used to it, cake once a week or so will probably not start cravings.

I went for a year or so without sugar, which felt amazing.

These days, I find there's one factor that determines if I succeed: whether my meals contain simple carbs.

When I cook for myself, it's always whole grain, so I don't crave sugar afterward. But when my schedule requires eating out regularly, it's very hard. After pasta I crave ice cream, after a sandwich I crave soda, etc. And then I start getting tired, exacerbating cravings...and so downhill...:(
Where I am right now. :((

^ Don't be too hard on yourself. If you're too strict - especially in the beginning - you'll give up soon. We all have times where we are just lazier with eating healthy...Start step by step and you'll succeed! You don't have to cut all goodies out at once, but substitute coffee with sugar with tea with milk... Or chocolat with oatmeal and bananas.

This may help you :flower: I know it was the advice given to me when I became vegan.

Cut things out one at a time. "OK, today, I will cut out soda." After a month or so of no extra soda sugars, you'll think, "OK, no more cookies." Cookies: cut! And every so often, whenever you feel ready, continue to cut things out gradually. If you do it all at once, it'll make the process so much more difficult. :flower: One thing at a time is the way to go.

^ i agree. be kind to yourself. every goal i had for my mind and body (do sport ,eat better, meditate) i suceeded because i went slowly. just a little bit so it was easy and i didn't give up. good luck !

Nonono!! Karl says we must suffah!! I cut out sugar, dairy, well anything WHITE from my diet and just dont allow it ever. I know I would be addicted to all that crap again if I even had one bite. Iz a drug to me. And I feel so righteous and all now ... more energy and more clearheaded/

recently i have discovered this way of eliminating my cravings for unhealthy sweets:
drink chai tea (in tea bag form, not the pre-mixed stuff in cartons)
eat oatmeal with either honey or agave nectar + cinnamon
seriously this combo works well cause i get all the flavors i want and the oatmeal really fills me up after dinner!

No way would I deprive myself of pure cane sugar but here are some things I avoid:

artificial sweeteners: All of them are poisons.

high fructose corn syrup: Pure cane sugar tastes better.

low fat milk: It's awful 'cause there ain't enough fat in it.

table salt: Iodized sea salt is better for health as it has more minerals.

salt substitutes: All of them are poisons.

margarine: Butter tastes better.

butter or margarine substitutes: All of them are poisons.

products labeled "diet" or "low sodium" or "low fat" or "low carbs" or "sugar free" or "veggie" or a dozen other vogue bullsh!t buzz tags selling the hope of weight loss to people who do not or cannot exercise: Most of those products are unsatisfying to me or they're poisons.

canola oil: Olive oil or peanut oil tastes better.

"light" beers: Ice brewed beers or heavy European beers taste better and they have more alcohol.

non dairy creamers: Real half & half tastes better.

sports drinks like Gatorade when exercising: Plain tap water always works faster to improve performance and if I need more of a boost I will drink something with more real sugar and calories than sports drinks.

white bread: I can get more nutrition eating saw dust or card board.

When I was studying nutrition and dietetics (my old school major) I was always told everything in moderation. You don't want to jump in and eliminate everything at once. Your cravings will just get bigger and you will give in and just pig out on that craving. After a while your body just get used to not eating sugars or sweeteners. I used to be horrible when it came to sweets but slowly I changed my diet and now I rarely crave sweets. If I do, I just eat a piece of fruit and the natural sugars take care of the cravings. Same thing with salts, you want to avoid table salts and get something lighter. When you eliminate salts from your diet, you also get used to that and your foods will just taste normal after a while.

Sports drinks bother me, they sell them at my school canteen and girls drink them at lunch etc. when they don't even do any exercise! I just shudder at the amount of sugar and carbs.

^ :innocent: Glad I ain't the only one who thinks so when it comes to people who just drink sports drink rather than, say I don't know, doooo some sports.

I think the only sugars I consume are in fruits. But I do know that sugars are probably secretly lying in my two weekly Snapple peach teas.

Such an interesting topic!! I thought that in order to give my try to refrain from sugar a good start I might as well post in here .

The reason why I am doing it is because I am actually addicted to it and I can almost predict the craving coming when I am stressed. Not only that, but I've never quite realised that sugar is so bad, I've always thought the only reason it is is because it makes you fat, and since I'm quite slim eventhough I often substitute breakfast and snacks with chocolate bars I've thought it's okay.

But recently I've read loads of studies regarding too much refined sugar and the fact that it can even cause mild depression has made me really alert. Especially since I am not feeling quite as healthy as I should for my age ... so I'm gonna try as best as I can to cut out all sweets/sugar loaden baking goods/sugar loaden cereal/sugar loaden yoghurt etc. ... I'm still gonna have the occasional chocolate bar though ... can't stay away from that forever

This thread is a good reminder for me. I've eliminated sugar for several years then its creeping up in my diet again little by little....

That made me laff!!! :P

I was thinking about getting the book 'The Karl Lagerfeld Diet', partly for entertainment, it has to be said! The few excerpts I've read have been very interesting, and far more lyrical than I'd thought they'd be. But I would very much like to improve my diet and cut down (if not cut out) on certain things...sorry, that's not quite in the Karl spirit! Must shape up.

I'll report back if I buy the book and walk the walk.:D

Is Splenda poisonous or is it just the aspartames? :(

Well, splenda is mostly dextrose (grape sugar) if I'm not getting senile, so about 0.5 g a day won't harm.
The only sweetener that I like is raw unpasteurized honey anyway, in worst case sugar beet sugar (when cooking). Cane sugar just tastes weird to me. :ninja:

I agree 100%!!! I was always brought up that natural/real thing, even though fatty or sugary as it is, is ALWAYS better but of course in very low doses.

I rarely have sugar in my coffee but once a week ill have 2 teaspoons of raw sugar, and real butter on my toast!

Everything else, like you said...plain and simple are unnatural and not good for your body at all!

Margerine is BLACK before they make it that yellow colour!
