The ultimate uniform for fall, from Luella Bartley—a plaid jumper layered over a black turtleneck and black tights—brings back memories of the heady excitement of back-to-school days.

This amazing white placket dress coat from my favorite new label, Rodarte, has echoes of Sgt. Pepper and is an easy way to channel fall's '60s mod look. But its incredible detail and couture-like finish make it an instant classic.

editor-at-large, ELLE.com:

Everything about New York hometown heroine Alice Roi’s pretty-in-punk collection struck a chord with me, especially her consistently inventive—and compulsively wearable—riffs on some of the season's most important trends, from legging dressing to fall's ubiquitous black-and-white palette.

Adriana Leshko
editor-at-large, ELLE.com:

I love the unexpected layering of Roi’s sheer, delicately draped cream knit over a black, A-line minidress; we're so used to seeing tunic-length tops paired with skinny jeans these days that a new way to wear the look feels liberating.

editor-at-large, ELLE.com:

In a "Girls Gone Wild" world Roi’s softly sculptural white evening dress might be a bit of a tough sell (I don't think we'll see La Lohan in it anytime soon), but for me it encapsulates a brand of subtle sexiness that beautifully skirts the divide between a vintage and modern silhouette.

Adriana Leshko

Proof that feminine doesn't have to mean saccharine, Roi downplays the frou factor of puffed sleeves by finishing them off with punky clear cellophane ribbons, and pairing her not-so-sweet baby doll with tart cranberry leggings. I want the whole look, down to those sexy patent leather fingerless gloves.

Derek Lam’s brand-new line of bags is perfect for fall. I can't think of a better color than this deep, dark shade of oxblood. And his cool signature ram's head detail doesn't hurt either—especially since I'm an Aries!

The ideal little black dress, from Lanvin, for working the holiday party

beauty/fitness director, ELLE:

If I rolled out of bed and accidentally put on one designer from head to toe, it would be Marc Jacobs from his Marc by Marc line. The first model to hit his runway wore my ideal fall outfit: a long skirt and cozy turtleneck topped with a tailored vest. Very high school art teacher on holiday.

Unlike the heavy stoles of seasons past, the slim fur bow-tie from YSL is light enough to wear indoors as well as out. I can imagine nothing more cozy than this little slice of heaven to soften the look of a pantsuit or to dress up weekend jeans.

Emily Dougherty
beauty/fitness director, ELLE:

I'm a huge fan of black from head to toe, so I love to see basic blacks get dressed up with a bit of color, like with this embellished minidress by Chanel. I'd pair this with solid black tights and black ballet slippers.

Cheryl Locke
market editor, ELLE.com:

The relaxed cut makes this little black dress from Max Azria look so effortless and breezy, but the details at the neckline make it dressy enough for a party.

Cheryl Locke
market editor, ELLE.com:

I love how tough this Mary Jane from Louis Vuitton looks. It's so solid that it will be on the same scale as fall's oversized sweaters and voluminous skirts.

Cheryl Locke
market editor, ELLE.com:

Belts are a must-have since we'll see a lot of volume again this season. This one from Gucci caught my eye because the brown and tan are so classic for fall, but because of the crocodile and stitching it'll never get boring.

Cheryl Locke
market editor, ELLE.com:

A matte satin blouse in a moody color, like this murky blue from Twinkle, will be a perfect complement to the heavy black and gray wool vests and jackets this fall. Pretty in a romantic—but not girly—kind of way.

Susan Cernek
associate fashion news editor, ELLE:

While his first U.S. show lent undeniable buzz to New York Fashion Week, Karl Lagerfeld added his chic touch to fall's essential knits. Both romantic and rebellious at once, his bell-sleeved sweater dress is my top pick for the most wearable, of-the-moment look.

Jennifer Schonborn
executive editor, ELLE.com:

I found myself honing in on the flowing, gauzy dresses and skirts that dotted the runways for fall. I love this silk double Georgette and chiffon dress by Jonathan Saunders because it looks like it emits light. And the shapes are so beautiful. A nice counterpoint to all the dark, solemn looks we're seeing this season.

Jennifer Schonborn
executive editor, ELLE.com:

This Jean Paul Gaultier dress reminds me of one of my favorite dresses ever—a lush, purple velvet swing dress I had years ago that I'd probably still be wearing today if a just-painted door at my workplace bathroom didn't swing shut on me and leave a honking peach paint blob on the back. At last, I may have found my replacement, my evening staple that I'd probably end up wearing way too often thanks to its dream combination of silk velvet and silk chiffon.

I chose three similar Vera Wang looks, all with a Rothko print. This chiffon draped gown with Prussian blue corsage looks so weightless and elegant.

Another stunning variation, this with a black double layer crinkle chiffon cap-sleeve blouse and textured organza full skirt.

Megan Deem
beauty/fitness senior editor, ELLE:

I usually don't like to dress in complete looks from the runway, but I love everything Marc Jacobs sends down the catwalk. This combination of tobacco and gray with the black leather belt and gloves was my favorite by far. And the fur hat! The whole ensemble is perfection.

Katie Paine
fashion assistant, ELLE:

I love this look from Derek Lam because of the gray jacket, which has a very fluid shape, almost cape-like. The pencil skirt and leggings are also great—a big trend for the fall season.

The Rochas little black dress is a favorite thanks to the delicate beading—which makes the dress very refined—and the feminine shape of the silhouette.

Nina Garcia
fashion director, ELLE:

One of the chicest and most wearable collections, yet it is still cutting edge. Love the mix of black and gold in Yves Saint Laurent’s understated elegance.

Even though Nicolas Ghesquière returned to the archives for inspiration, this was his most directional and modern collection in terms of shape and volume. This is my favorite Balenciaga look. The timeless jacket to keep and own forever will take you from day to evening. They are also the best-cut pants ever!

what odd choices

Luella? Eew!

I might forgive it because it mentions YSL but still...eew.

thanks for posting its so much better than vogue and w's lists!

I like most of the choices, actually. This is a much better list than W's.

yeah much better indeed.. thanks for bringing this in :flower:

btw, which edition of Elle is the list from? must be USA right?

yeah, its on elle.com, which is american elle. and i know nina garcia is the fashion director of american elle because they saay it every week on project runway

Solid choices- I particularly think that Nina Garcia does her job well

Why do American magazines choose so many NYC collections!? I do like the ones they chose, but only a few looks are from the European designers. Other than the obvious bias, very good choices. I especially like the Marc Jacobs outfit they picked: it's my favorite of the show. But, LUELLA!? Where's the logic in this world?

^ politics? :D
now seriously, it was too obvious that this selection was from an american prespective, maybe those editors mainly view NY collections? Cause Luella/Roi surely doesnt make much sense...

what i liked about this editorial is the fact that they dont really talk about whole collections but specific looks they'd like to adopt, i found this quite fresh attitude, makes sense

some of my fave fw0607 looks are there, eg:
the Gaultier bubble dress, the Balenciaga suit , the Mark Jacobs look with the chocolate rushed detailed blouse, the Derek Lam cape, Prada's sporty zip coat, and the black Lanvin dress

Solid choices indeed, but slightly conservative to be honest...

The moment I read the "Nina Garcia nominates the best cut pants ever"-part, I knew it was Balenciaga and I knew which outfit she was talking about. I'd kill for those pants.

I really like this, and I really appreciate what Elle does with their website. Compare & contrast with Bazaar, which last time I looked had one of the very worst websites ever.

This is not something that could probably ever really be published (hardcopy) because it's so personal and specific, but that's exactly why I love it. One of the Vera looks was also one of my favorites. This is also how I think about favorites--in terms of individual pieces and looks I like, vs entire collections. That's more of a critic's perspective, but this is about what can I wear?

^^actually...lucky posts editor's picks every month in the magazine
and W and style.com do it as well...

but if you know about how things work behind the scenes....
it's not REALLY truly their own picks..politics definitely comes into play with what they 'pick'...and there is someone up high who decides what they are 'allowed' to pick...

not surprised to see luella in there at all myself-
imo-this is the VERY best collection of her entire career...
and i am LOVING jumpers right now...
it's all i want for fall...

^ Yes, I almost mentioned how this is different from what Lucky does ... but how do you know about that, you don't read magazines

So this is runway, and Lucky's editor's pick pages are all themed, trend-related and tend to be relatively inexpensive & hopefully actually available items (although I've certainly come across things in their pages, not necessarily the pick pages, that weren't produced). Their picks tend not to involve designer or runway.

I thought this Elle item had the ring of truth to it & really was the editors' picks. After all, this is web content, pretty throwaway in terms of they're not paying to print it, and advertising and all that political stuff is much less of a concern.
