Probably persistence. Despite her height and frame, I can imagine the world telling Elle many times that she wasn't suitable, and she's kept on working and proving them wrong. Being married to Gilles Bensimon must have been a boon at the time - while it lasted - but once they got divorced, I believe she was persona non grata at Elle, where she'd featured so much. She didn't give up, just worked hard to re-establish her profile elsewhere.

The ELLE tribute is a solid one, with 6 (or 8…?) page spread filled with that brand of scrapbook-layout that’s sincere but obviously a rushed job. There’s not a single new pic of course; hopefully Emmanuelle will give Azzzedine the strong tribute with a gorgeous story that does his life’s work justice. A cross-generations' worth of top models would be fitting to celebrate his archive.

It's a pity that VP's next issue is February. They'll come late for the trivute but i have huge expectations from Emmanuelle as VP has always been a supporter of Alaia and as she knew Alaia herself.

I believe that Carine will do something at HB and CRFB, Edward has to do something in Vogue Uk and i also hope that Anna gives him a tribute. I know their relationship wasn't the smoothest but his contribution to fashion is enough for him to get a tribute. And, ATL and Grace has always been supportive of him...

I really like the Sonia Braga shot. The space above her head should've been trimmed, but it looks divine. The rest are cheesy and budget and doesn't scream Elle or fashion.

Right?! In Australia Elle is still considered the quintessential Aussie supermodel. In her heyday she was consistently one of the highest paid models with solid name recognition, I mean what other supermodel hosted SNL? Because she was never featured much in Vogue (just 4 Aussie and 1 British cover) and didn't book as much high fashion work as the others I think she's a bit overlooked. The fact is Elle monetised and parlayed her fame into so many ventures while the others were still lip synching to George Michael and competing for covers. I think she was perfect for this Alaia tribute cover - she was both a friend of Alaia and constantly in and on ELLE! And that image is Simply iconic!
