advice on getting into fashion college plz

Hello my name is Cloie and I just found this website and I love it! I would really love it if anyone could give me any advice. I really want to start going to school next year, probably FIDM since I live in Los Angeles, but I'm really nervous about applying because I feel unqualified. I've been interested in fashion as long as I can remember, I'm always reading fashion magazines and books and i constantly sketch but I'm not sure if I have what it takes to get in...I guess I'm just want to know how much experience, talent and creativity you need to have to get into a place like FIDM. I could really take any advice because I feel like I have no idea what I'm talking about (sorry about the ramble)

First, you should learn to reseach on your own ... since that is a necessary trait for any student at the college level. In a 10 second search, this is what I found ... right on FIDM's website;

http://www.fidm.com/Academic/Admissions/admissions.html

Secondly ... take classes in your related field now ... if they have them at your school or at night at a community college. Fashion drawing or illustration, art, color theory, art history, textiles and sewing are a few of the things that come to mind. These classes would look good on your application and help you develop your eye and the skills that you will need at FIDM. You will be competing with students who have a lot of this experience under thier belts ... so start working on it now.

Good luck!

Any advice?

Hey everyone,

Ok, well what I've been wanting to do for a while is start my own label, so I've put together the designs and everything, and what I wanted to ask everyone is whether you think that starting out online with a made-to-order collection is sensible or not... my thoughts were that it would be better starting off since boutiques can be hard to deal with and I could do the PR to attract customers. Any thoughts? :flower:

why not?
alternative marketing ideas are the key
you may start real slow, but you can evolve
i think you will need some heavy 'advertising' through search machines etc
even a bit of PR at local or national press, communicate your work
but yes, why not?
do it your own way loz ;)

retail - does anyone own their own boutique?

Fashion History

Education question for everyone:
I'm currently in my last year of a Masters program which is heavily philosophical and western-though based, and before this I received a BA in Literature/Art History. I am also a librarian, though not certified.

Strangely (or not strangely) enough, the next program I'm looking for is something involving Fashion and Design history. I'd really like to be working with more concrete subjects again, and within a wonderful, inspiring community. My hope is to eventually work for a museum with their textile and costume department, or decorative arts department or work as an archivist in a design house.

I'm only 23, but like I said, I'll be receiving a master's degree in a semester and have a lot of creative energy that has been building up.

What I'd like to know is, has anyone had any personal experience with the Fashion/Design history programs at FIT, Parson's, or the Royal College of Art in London?

Does anyone know of additional programs like this? I have a working knowledge of the french language, and at one point lived in London, so I am not set on staying in the US for this coursework.
Thanks!

Hi guys,
I'm really really interested in careers realted to fashion or beauty industry. I'm currently a liberal college undergrat majoring in econ and biochem.
I'd like to look for internships (in more fashion business/retail field), any suggestion about where I should look for online?
thanks so much!

i agree..im in the same position and ive been looking for fashion corporate positions around the OC area but I haven't been having much luck. any suggestions from the pros?

I don't think this was ever answered, but one does one need to become a fashion/music/entertainment writer? Do most of the people high up in this particular industry (Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfield, Jefferson Hack) have journalism degrees or what?

Thanx

Tips for Pursuing a Future in Fashion

I know many of you are designers or on the way to being one, so I wanted to know some tips or things I should be doing to help me get into a good college to study fashion and being a designer. What schools would you recommend? I know I would like to be in NYC and I am really interested in NYU, although I don’t know if they offer any fashion courses or majors. Do any of you go to NYU? What should I be doing to prepare to get into college? Thanks for your help!

If New York is where you would like to be...I highly reccomend FIT or Parsons. Calvin Klein and many other designers have started out there. It's cheaper than NYU and fashion based(NYU is academics based- you go there to be a doctor, anthropologist, etc etc-it's not a fashion school) with optional internships at fashion houses. www.fit.edu Also good to note. NYU is academics based in acceptance, depending on your major-fit will not look at your SAT scores, but will request a portfolio of work that you have done if fashion design is your intended major.
