pout, i think you did the right choice, start with marketing and if you feel like to go on you can always choose to take some extra courses at Parsons

Is anyone here know or is a interior designer?

Because I will be studying the subject for the next four years.

Does anyone have tips or advice for being an interior designer?

Fashion PR Advice Needed!

Im a freshman in college, majoring in Retailing (but also taking many textile/apparel design classes for practical reasons!). I really am interesting in Fashion PR but dont think theres a market for the type I want to do here in the Midwest. (im from minneapolis, and go to school in Madison WI).

Question is: Would it be most helpful for me to look for internships in NYC and possibly move there after school? I want to get my foot in the door and tkae the best route possible...this job really excites/interests me!! Any advice/help is appreciated..thanks!

Hi ,guys. I'm new here. I have a huge passion on fashion, I know I have a good and special sense about fashion, I am in my fouth year of communication right now in Canada, I love to continue my education in fashion design in u.s. or Europe. My preference is to apply the AAS program in Parons. However,I have no education background about drafting or sewing...so where should I start? Take one year college in Canada , then get transferred to Parons ? or is there any course for students in the beginning level and then apply AAS prgram after you finish those courses?
Please give me some suggestions

Thank you

*stylesnob, areas with no fashion PR may need it more than you know, but i think interning in NY is a brilliant idea.. you can get a 'grip' of PR-in-action and then move back if you think it may work..

*sophia gogo, a foundation course in Canada wont hurt a bit

*viva la vogue, maybe you need to check our stylist superthread..
celebrity stylists get very well payed as far as i know but they dont seem to enjoy working with celebrities too much
see, celebrities can be a bit non-stylish and terribly opinionated.. which makes working with them a bit tiring

Any hints on how to get into a career as a model booker??? modeling agency work??? I have a college degree from a very good school, but the bulk of my experience is in another field...
Any suggestion where I can look for job openings??

I feel like a baby in all of this. I'm only a junior in highschool and by page four of this thread my head started to hurt. & to think I already knew and understood most of this stuff. I live in the motherland of spandex and sequins, there is no guidance for me here! I keep thinking.. what if I invest all of this time (& $$$!) into fashion which I may love but I end up in debt and living at home when I could have gone to NYU and done journalism or photography or whatever. It's a shot in the dark.

Newbie Here

ok.. i know that these boards get bombarded with the same questions.. so you guys can boo/hiss at me if you like.. i'm still gonna ask!

i graduated with a BA in communications and have done internships w/ rich's/macy's for buying internships.. i've also went to florence and studied fashion design..

i'm currently applying for school at Parson's for the AAS degree. will this help me for jobs in the fashion marketing field? i don't want to design.. i want to do the PR and marketing behind it all.

does a AAS degree from Parson's help? i don't want to go through the degree and the money for school if i'm going to be unemployed at the end.

thanks in advance!

A lot of people have actually took the route of getting an AAS and completing it in one year at Parsons. It helps them in terms of building contacts within that industry and having formal training. It's definitely something that looks great on your resume.

I think a BA in Comm. is suffice to get into the industry itself, its a matter of networking and being resourceful with what you have. I think with your qualifications you could start sending out your resumes to companies, building on networking with your internship contacts and seeing how it goes from there.

My friend studied Art History and landed a pr job at a pretty cool well known brand, and did it based on alumni contacts and internship contacts, so that's definitely a cheaper way to go. But if you want to spend another year at school and delay the real world which is always nice :D , then do the one year program.

Sorry for the long winded answer  .

Sophia,

I have a friend that studied English and then applied to the AAS at Parson in Fashion Design. She completed it in one year. She had no previous background in fashion whatsoever, no drafting or sewing skills. She has now started her own brand and has earned interest from Barneys, Bergdorf and stores of the like. So all I think you need is motivation, ambition and a definite drive to succeed. No previous sewing skills are necessary.

Thanks!

It really helps me out. The main problem I have is that I'm located in Atlanta, GA. I've applied to jobs in NYC and no one wants to hire me b/c i'm out of state. Part of going back to school would put me in a more accessible area of making connections.. but right now sadly I have none :(

I figured that a year in school with a AAS Degree in Fashion Marketing and being in NYC can increase my chances of finding a decent job when I graduate.. I would be totally okay with going back to school for a year. I'm already sick of work after just 1 1/2 years..

I know many of you are designers or on the way to being one, so I wanted to know some tips or things I should be doing to help me get into a good college to study fashion and being a designer. What schools would you recommend? I know I would like to be in NYC and I am really interested in NYU, although I don’t know if they offer any fashion courses or majors. Do any of you go to NYU? What should I be doing to prepare to get into college? Thanks for your help!

No. NYU doesn't offer any fashion course.
I wish they did because I really want to go to NYU too.

Help from a few experts pleaseee?

Okay so I'm kind of young... 17 to be exact and cannot wait to go to university to study Fashion Design before I start up my own line. I have connections with a few local magazine editors and one in New York not to mention buyers for a store in L.A and Japan and possibly locally as well. Also for your reference, I have been saving up and will continue to -- so I guess budget (whether I like it or not) isn't much of an issue. Though it would be great if I can get an estimate from any of you of how much it is to start up.

So here's my question...

Any wanna-be fashion designer knows that you have to start small to make it big and is even more fimiliar with personal sketch books full of designs. Now a question to the wise... Where does one go from here? I mean, who is to be contacted with regards to turning these sketches into reality. It's especially a concern because I have no knowledge in creating patterns and can sew but not decently enough to be sold for the price these peices will be going for...

Help.

P.S I currently live in Toronto but am going to be moving to New York to study and particularly, really get started in the industry within 6-7 months. Do you think it would be too difficult to make the transition after I have already started my line down here? I have been in talks with a few PR reps down in New York (Yes, I am a planning kind of person).

Let me start out by saying you are awesome. One person I got a lot of advice from was Marco Almera, he's a real cool guy and he has a lot to say about breaking into the art industry. Go to http://www.marcoalmera.com/ and shoot him an email. I've met him few times in person and he's a cool guy, he has a lot to offer, and he's approachable, unlike others.
