Fashion Industry Careers - Options (See individual threads for specific careers.)

this would be... illustration? i'm curious too! from most people i've talked to, they just say contact different publishing houses, the people YOU want to work for and send them your portfolio. some people also send postcards with their drawings on it... i read it somewhere.
i also heard the Graphic Artist's Guidebook (?) is a great book for the money side of it: how much you get paid, etc.

So here's my question...

Any wanna-be fashion designer knows that you have to start small to make it big and is even more fimiliar with personal sketch books full of designs. Now a question to the wise... Where does one go from here? I mean, who is to be contacted with regards to turning these sketches into reality. It's especially a concern because I have no knowledge in creating patterns and can sew but not decently enough to be sold for the price these peices will be going for...

Help.

P.S I currently live in Toronto but am going to be moving to New York to study and particularly, really get started in the industry within 6-7 months. Do you think it would be too difficult to make the transition after I have already started my line down here? I have been in talks with a few PR reps down in New York (Yes, I am a planning kind of person).

hello and welcome to tFS,
try to browse back this section maybe you find your reply here..
in general you should try to get some fashion design courses, they will help

Can anyone recommend a good textile / fabric school in London? Thanks!

Hey, its been a while since I posted in this thread, and thought I'd ask for a bit of advice about a field I'm really interested in. I'm looking at taking a BA majoring in communications and getting into PR at a magazine or some sort of company in the fashion world hopefully... other than applying for internships is there anything I should take into consideration?

1) What is the pay-scale like for PR people in the fashion industry?
2) What sort of functions would I serve that are unique to the fashion industry?
3) What should I be doing to set myself up for this sort of career?

And also, is a BA Comm. useful if you're looking at becoming a modeling agent? Its not really a top priority but its nice to know what my options are. What sort of degree's are applicable to being an agent?

Thanks so much for any help you can provide, its greatly appreciated! Please PM me if you feel so inclined, I'd love to get some advice.

My Future Plans....

Hello,
I am only 15 at the moment, i know i can't believe i'm having to consider careers already!, and anyway i'm in the process of choosing the A-Levels i would like to do. This has made me think of what career i would like to persue, as all of my friends have a pretty solid idea and i seem a little lost! I have always been interested in fashion and have wanted to be a model since i was tiny, this is not possible as i am 5'5 and a size 9 (which is annoying when shopping for jeans!!). Then i started to conisder designing or maybe opening a boutique, which would sell womenswear and also pet apparel (yes i love dressing my dog up!).
Anyway, getting to the question, i was wondering on ur advice on whether to persue fashion, or to do a business course at university and open up a boutique, as i am split on which one to choose!?

....and if i become bankrupt im simply going to marry a millionaire!

Any help would be much appreciated xxx

haha I have the same problem as you!! I want to work in the fashion industry but know that I won't make millions so I'm torn between careers!

No offense but it seems your reasons for wanting to get into fashion will be a major problem for you in the future. Both of you. Any career in the fashion industry is much harder than you probably think it is. Don't be mistaken as many people I know are, by thinking that it's all as easy as picking what to wear in the morning or you're going to be real depressed in the future. You need to have a passion for fashion which will keep you going those endless days...

Anyway... Goodluck.

One last note...

Maybe consider a career as a buyer?

I don't know you but judging by your post I get the feeling that a career like that may suit you.

Where from Italy are you? I am going to move there soon...I am scared...:(

Do you need a degree?

I'm really intrested in either becoming a visual merchandiser, stylist or work for a fashion magazine.
Is there a particular degree u have to take?
Do you have to be able to draw and make the products aswell, because i really can't but i'm good at putting outfits together?
Any advise would be helpful!
Thanx,
Dx

hi there.i am currently looking into different universities to attend to get me into the fashion industry.thing is,i kinda know what i want to do eventually, but i have no clue as to how to go about getting there.i have looked at tons of prospectuses for art colleges, and textile and fashion specialist colleges and unis, but when it comes to looking at the course lists i just dont know which one will lead me in the right path.

i have been doing intensive art courses for four years now, gaining me increasing levels of qualification, and over that time my mind has worked more and more like a designer, and specialising in fashion, but i dont want to just design garnments.i would love to be able to make garnments of my own, yes, but it really is the promotion side of it tha appeals.

for any of you that watch americas next top model, you will know who i mean when i say that i really want to do what Jay Manuel does, which i direct the creative side to the photo shoots without having to actually take the pictures.so for example, designng the image, the costume, location, themes and messages in the image.to take beautiful clothing,or products, that either i have designed,or someone else has designed and put it into a beautiful image.that really appeals to me.how to become that,is where i am stuck.

please please please, any advise on helping me achieve this dream of mine, and getting me on the right path is much appreciated!!!

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone could help me with a question I have.

What exactly is the difference betweeen a fashion editor and a fashion journalist or writer? Both sound alike

Thank you :flower:

fashion journalist mainly writes fashion articles
fashion editor is a term used mainly for fashion stylists or for heads of the fashion styling team
