well actually i mean fashion right now is boring. i am so bored with recycling old stuff. have we really run out of good ideas? the most innovative stuff i've seen lately usually entails deconstruction in some form. its happening in music too with the strokes, the shins, etc. who are good, but are such a throwback to classic rock and roll. i want to see a fashion revolution like we had in the 60's when everyone was looking to the future. perhaps our society feels too insecure at this point to move forward?

thoughts?

i actually musta gree for the msot part, how ever young talents are still looking to the future.

nostalgia in fashion is supposed to have a real sociological explanation (according to fashion historians).
It's all about escapism from current socio-economic situations, according to the replies i got when ages ago i discussed the issue with currators at V&A in London. The explanation was that during 'hard times' designers and clients long for 'past' good-times styles. According to the same scources, 'new styles' are blooming only during optimistic enviroments (turn of the century, 50's, 60's ) during times of economic growth, security etc, which of course is not the case as we talk.

New trend with indie/rising designers is more towards exclusive hand made details than nostalgia. All thats new right now, seems to be a fresh use of colour, new pigments and unusual colour combinations.

I hold nothing against nostalgia when it's done with a new vision, what bored me were those 70s- 80s revivals , now the turn towards the 50s -20s seem somehow fresh when done in an intelligent way. It's all about escapism. :flower:

Great input, Lena. ;) I definetly agree with what you said most. :flower:

I agree definetly with how the likes of Izaac Mizrahi and Stephen Burrows think,"What's the use of going back to the past?" I mean mod revivals have been done like over 30 times in the past three decades (i.e Marc Jacobs fall 2003 show, Fendi and Prada's fall 2001 show and Stephen Sprouse's 1999 fall show.)

Though still I'm not totally against revials as long as it is done in a modern way and is moved forward. :flower:

There's no way we'll ever escape from the past. Even if you assume its the most modern there's always something beneath that's derivitive of the past. Personally,I prefer when I designer works upon classics, traditions and historical references rather than those retro revivals. But a good designer knows how make it refreshing and contemporary;by experimenting and reworking everything into one's own signature.

As Lena pointed out there is a revolution going on at this very moment. Indie designers are beginning to have an appreciation of old needlework(done by hand, mind you) and homespun qualities.

Of course we haven't run out of ideas!

In fact you are right in the middle of an exciting fashion revolution. Armani can't go on for ever and when he dies and is replaced by young designers like Dolce & Gabbana we will see unstructured tailoring disappear from the catwalk to be replaced by sharp tailoring and hard-corsetry. Unstructured tailoring was part of a riposte to the fashions of the rich, a riposte that is no longer relevant in modern times when every major fashion house makes what was once considered sacrilege - jeans. Fashion is constantly evolving and hence never boring.

Fashion is now so Boring!

They dont make collections like they used to, thats for sure.

I agreee, you reminded that 99% of my comments/thoughts on this seasons collections and general red carpet occasions have been, "boring, boring, boring..."

Fashin could be so exciting, people are way to concerned about what other people would think. It's a pity... I would love to live in a world where everyone would stuff like Bjork, Alexander McQueens stuff... ya know what I mean. How cool would that be??

I agree- i've been browsing this site and just don't feel bothered to post wnything concerning fashion- same sh*t different season ..i suppose

It's not so much as fashion is boring as interest in fashion seems to be waning. Even designers are branching out into other things (different collabrations). It can be interpreted as designers having an excess of energy so their focus is not entirely on their craft or that they don't seem to be too bothered about it but I doubt that's the case.

It's funny how it's only guys who posted in this thread so far.

Disagree with the original statement. Fashion is as excting as it ever was. It's just there is so much of it out there now that it's becoming hard to concentrate on the good stuff. Fashion now is what pop music has become in the 80's - everyone and their dog seems to want to be a designer. People have too much disposable income on their hands apparently - that's why there has been such a huge spawning of "designers." However, if you just find your vein and concentrate on it - fashion is amazing. I have my artisans, my Belgians, and my Japanese - and not only the oldies are going as strong as ever, there is a new generation that's adding more to it.

Well,in terms of talent,I don't disagree,Faust. However,I do feel there is a real sense of safeness going on in fashion at the moment and everybody seems to be turning their way towards commercialism. I was so excited to see what Shelley Fox did this season because it was just a break away from all the monotony that's happening...she was the first this season who truly had the balls to present a really creative, really intuitive collection and not have that nonsense playing a factor in her work.

Am I the first girl to respond, then?

I agree that there is a lot of talent as Faustus says. But I've also been feeling that fashion is losing its mystique... Perhaps the internet age is making the exchange of visual information so fast-paced, over-exposing fashion and spreading it thin. So many different trends and ideas are marketed so vastly, one after another. We need time, space, and quiet to produce any good art---and then more time, space, and quiet to appreciate it. Maybe fashion is becoming too fast paced to allow for that...?

Why does faust always have the most intelligent comment to offer?:innocent:

Anyway, I'll have to agree. Fashion is escapism, and that is a different matter for everyone.
Some like season-old borcade and circle skirts. Others can appreciate fashion for the good stuff.
I have to ask this though. Has there always been so little soul in mainstream fashion?

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Everything is super-available, super-quick. There is no mystique, nothing is non-attainable. Everyone has a piece of "designer" something or other - bag, coat, tee shirt, jeans. There are countless fashion magazines, going over the same trends, using the same key pieces, the same superbrands. There are myriad websites, so you can catch a view of everything as soon as it comes off the catwalk, and you can catch a view of things that you can't even buy, but which you never-the-less become aware of. You can SEE everything - you don't have to FIND anything. It's all there on a plate. Take it or leave it. Fashion as ready-meal.

Johnny contrary to your view I find fashion more exciting because its more accessible....I can see things I couldn't even imagine before. I don't find it boring at all (well except NYC fashion week ) - I find it as inspiring as I did when I was 14 and first caught the bug. Admittedly I don't like the same kind of fashion now but thats how ones tastes evolve & mature surely...? I am not sure I find mystique interesting per se.....its beauty that i find interesting. And beauty is still there.
