Fashion Marketing

^ General Marketing? I heard Kingston University is pretty good

Yeah, because I am not 100% sure that I want to pursue a career in just fashion marketing, I am afraid that after few years of studies I'll just want to work in general marketing and then fashion marketing diploma won't get me anywhere :(

I've read The End of Fashion: How Marketing Changed the Fashion Industry its brilliant! I suggest that book to everyone!

I've just added it to my "Hold" list at the library.. can't wait to read it! It will be my travel read for when I go home for Thanksgiving.

I advise that if you want to do fashion marketing, even if general marketing may be your future career, to get into the fashion side it would be better to go to a fashion university..they have all the contacts to get you a job in that area, you are still learning marketing (the same that everyone else does) they just make you do projects relating to art/fashion, it sounds bad but the name of the university sometimes is worth more that the degree
:D

I am nearing the end of this book...

Very good! :woot: I couldn't put it down. Too bad the publication date is 2000... much has happened in the past 9 years (such as: the closing of Marshall Field's in downtown Chicago, the re-emergence of Balmain, and the continued downfall of department stores in the US).

I hate to write a me-too comment but I think this book is required reading for anyone in the industry. And I agree that we'd all have much to gain if Agins decided to update it but I think it stands well enough on its own so we'll have to remain satisfied with it.

Help!

I'm interested in going into marketing/fashion marketing, I think that's the best option that gives me alot of options to choose from later on with my degree. Right now I'm getting my AA, but I was looking to transfer after I get my degree. I've seen FIT and I do not like the courses for myself; they don't appeal to me. I'm interested somewhere in the USA or EU; preferably Barcelona, Madrid, or Italy although I wouldn't mind going to the UK. I've also have seen Polimoda which seems more appealing with their courses but I wish they had more classes in English with their marketing programs in their undergraduate courses! That's why maybe going to Spain could be an option because I'm also fluent in Spanish. I would just like maybe some options- online doesn't do justice for me sometimes and it can be incredibly frustrating.
If someone could help me that would be great! :flower:

Another book that is not 100% in-line with marketing, but has some of the same elements as The End of Fashion is Delux - How Luxury Lost Its Luster.

If anybody else has some essential fashion/marketing books, please post! :flower:

(great thread guys!)
i was a bit lost when i got to the university, but i ended up studying economics, because i like business and the more sociological aspects of it. but as i always loved fashion, now i start to think about doing a master in fashion marketing.

the thing is i live and study in portugal, which has an underdeveloped fashion industry. on the other hand my university has great connections with other universities around europe.

but then i started thinking about brazil, specially sao paulo. do any of you know anything about good fashion marketing masters there? do any of you work in the business there?

Hey everyone, I'm new here!

I'm in my final semester of a Bachelor of Business Management majoring in Marketing. I have a marketing internship in a non-fashion related company, but am really only interested in fashion.

Just wondering if anyone did a non-fashion related marketing degree, and whether they have any advice on breaking into the industry. I would just love to hear a success stories really

I'm thinking I'll just move to a city that has a lot more opportunities and work my way up.

And just to add to the thread - I think it's a great idea for people to get a general marketing degree as opposed to fashion marketing one - I'm taking electives in fashion too. I think you'll give yourself a lot more opportunities if you have a broader degree. At least it gives you the opportunity of getting a general marketing job if you can't find a fashion one when you graduate.

i have a bachelor's of science in marketing from nyu stern... I didn't try very hard to find a job in fashion after graduation, but i'm definitely planning to work on it now. I agree with everyone else that's posted (i just read this whole thread! I should be sleeping!) I think a general marketing degree can be a lot more versatile.

i read Deluxe, and enjoyed that. I have the End of Fashion but can't remember if I ever read it? I just started reading luxury brand management: a world of privilege by michel chevalier, so i'll let you guys know what I think of it.

Has anyone else read any good branding/marketing/pr books? i'd love to hear some suggestions

^ the End of Fashion is great... if you aren't sure you read it, you probably haven't.

I began Deluxe, but didn't make it too far before I had to return it to the library.

Please report on Luxury Brand Management when you're done.

i am soo glad i found this thread, i went through all 8 pages and they are extremely helpful.
Right now I'm writing a paper about fashion merchandising since is the career field I want to go into. This is my first year of college so right now I'm just taking my requirements.
The thing is is that I live in Chicago and moving to New York to pursue fashion will most likely not happen. I'm worried that I won't be able to find alot of jobs here. Chicago is generally a business city, which is good since i'm majoring in marketing, but I don't know if its right for fashion.
Im also switching schools since the one i'm attending is more of a pyschology/education college so do any of you have any reccomedations? I'm thinking Columbia but im not 100% sure....
Also if anyone took an internship in chicago for fashion, let me know!!!

I would be soo grateful if someone would help me! :flower: :flower:

I've been looking at the one offered by Istituto Marangoni which looks good, but I've heard bad things about it..

I took their summer course in Fashion Brand Management a few years back and let me say it was very interesting.
It was super compact (almost 20 days long), but I'm glad I've taken it.
Overall it was a great experience; the classes, the people, the accomodation, the parties :P
I had second thoughts about it just before I go, but in the end of the month I was so sad it was over.
Oh, i was @Milan.

Does anyone have a PDF of the Mintel Online Fashion UK 2009 report they can email to me ? It is a very comprehensive market research report. Thank you

I was wondering if any of you know about the school ied in Rome? Was hard to find information about it online, the masters in luxury marketing management. If anyone have some information about this that would be wonderful.

Anyone have any suggestions for short course (evening/weekend/summer) for Marketing (general or fashion specific) within london?

I'm looking at City, LSE and Kings at the moment.. any advice welcome! :flower:
