Why? What do they do that makes them friendly. Not trying to be snarky; I seriously have no idea.

They make a soothing bizzzzzzbiiizzzzzzbizzzzizzizzizzizzbizzzbizzzbizzzizzizzizz noise.

In the article it says they make good fishing bait and help to prune trees. :flower:

Urgh---can you imagine what it sounds like to run a fishing hook through that carapace. Crunch.

Puke

i like those egyptian beetles. the deadly ones.

:P my friend in Ohio is all freaked out because her dogs likes to eat them.

^^Not just dog's eat them, there was a report that a man went to the hospital for having an allergic reaction (similar to one from shellfish) after eating about 30 of them stir fried. In the paper today, they talk about a book called "Cicada-licious: cooking and enjoying periodical cicadas"

And unfortunately some folks are wearing them :yuk:

I wore cicada exoskeletons in my hair as a joke during a homecoming theme day back in high school.

It being the early 1990s, most girls wore their hair permed up really big. I didn't have a perm and bear-claw bangs, but I set my hair the night before for the effect, and then strategically placed dessicated cicada exoskeletons throughout my enormous mallrat hairdo

Let it be known that I made a name for myself that day.

 ew...that's just disgusting.

my friend told me their life cycle is 17 years and (shes not making this up) and for that matter of time they stay under ground, latched to a plant root. When it's time to mate [right now], they come above ground, mate, lay their eggs and die.

...gross, gross, gross, but still, i find it all funny at some point  .

We have cicadas on a yearly basis in here .. they're really noisy and to me it reminds me of summer!!!
I wore cicada exoeskeletons ... when I was a kid, I wore 'em as brooches .. I think they may look cool if able to cover in metal or lacquer them or something ...
Good times!

Yeah, 'cause they have those grabby little foot-claw things and stick to even just an ordinary tee-shirt.

We have the annual ones, too. The 17 year ones are a different breed, I think.

I still think they're pretty cool. I find most bugs pretty fascinating, though I have no tolerance for termites or cockroaches, and I get quite cross when I discover slugs noshing away at any of my garden plants.

Yeah! I think you are tFspotter I relate the most regarding upbringing!
I like all types of bugs ... I do not think I'm grossed out about roaches ... I've touched even the extremely large ones with a really hard "shell" impossible to kill!
All the stories I could tell!

PS About garden slugs ... I use to salt 'em because my grandmother hated them.

Ive never heard about them till now, the bug that really gets me are JUNE bugs man i cant stand those.

we had them annually where i grew up in long island...my brother would chase me around with the shells...i'm oddly fasciinated by bugs as well...when we were kids...my brother and i would play in the woods and we'd roll over fallen logs and rocks and try to identify the bugs that crawled out from underneath...hahaha...never expected that from a city girl...did you?...but i have a whole nature side as well...my parents gave me a book on insects in my christmas stocking one year...and it just went from there...

we salted slugs as well... :ninja: :innocent:

*blows a kiss to softgrey*
Love you too!
And Spike ... I dunno ... the sound's nice it kinda gets in your head after a while ... most people would compare it to rave music .. I can take both!
