Man United 2 Arsenal 0
ROAR TALENT ... Rooney so happy after decking Gunners
By SUN ONLINE REPORTER
WAYNE ROONEY'S power-show gave United their ninth straight win - to leave Arsenal's top-four hopes wobbling. The England striker's mesmerising control and masterful finish supplied the 54th minute opener.
Then, after Arsenal roared back in a classy contest brimming with chances, Rooney wriggled free to tee up Ji-Park Sung's first Premiership goal.
After having a clear penalty claim turned down just before the break, Rooney took matters into his own hands.
His goal was spectacular as he took down Mikael Silvestre’s left-wing cross with one touch before blasting his 17th of the season.
And when he set up Park for the late second, it made sure United still have a slim chance of catching Chelsea.
With only five games of the campaign remaining, however, the odds are still stacked heavily in favour of Jose Mourinho’s men.
In front of 70,908 - the biggest crowd ever to see United play a game at Old Trafford - the two most successful sides of the Premiership era produced a thrilling spectacle.
Arsenal started brightly before United emerged from their shell.
It soon developed into an end-to-end encounter with the match threatening to explode two minutes before the break.
Rooney skipped round Jens Lehmann with Kolo Toure falling over his own keeper.
But as the England star shot, Toure flung both hands at the ball as it flashed goalwards.
THUMPER ... Wayne Rooney hits Man United's opener
It was a save Lehmann himself would have been proud of and seemed even to stun Philippe Senderos as the shot crashed back off the post he had rushed back to defend.
Referee Graham Poll missed it though, thinking the ball had just canoned straight back off the woodwork.
That was the second time in the opening 45 minutes a Red Devil had found himself clean through.
The first time saw Ruud van Nistelrooy steer his effort past Lehmann and the far stick.
The Gunners keeper had already kept out stinging efforts from Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, although at the other end Edwin van der Sar had also been busy.
Robin van Persie - who started in place of the rested Thierry Henry - twice forced the former Fulham No 1 into excellent saves.
Lehmann did well to prevent Ronaldo netting another in stoppage time.
But the German could not alter a result which, while keeping the title race alive over Easter, does not do much for Arsenal’s hopes of Champions League qualification.
