Post about your favourite museums (also other than art, ie history museums) and galleries. What are the best museums to visit in your area?

Great thread WhiteLinen! well my favorite museums are the MOMA, the Met, the Museum of Natural History, and Madame Tussaud's. I must admit, my city does have some amazing museums!

Please tell why you think those are great places :flower: I forgot to add that to the thread explanation. And thanks for the nice compliment.

MoMA - is a good place for younger people like me to start to appreciate good art.
The Met - is good because it has alot of European paintings and sculptures which i am always interested in. it has a fantastic exhibition called "Americans in Paris 1860-1900" which i am in love with. The Met is just a classic museum for me.
Madame Tussaud's- is just a really entertaining museum . its fun to see what poeple could do with wax.
Museum of Natural History - its good for people who like animals and science :flower:

The Victoria & Albert museum in London, because it has an amazing collection of clothes, antiques and furniture. Plus they have great exhibitions.
I like full-blown art museums as well but it's nice with a change, and I'm far more interested in clothes than paintings.

My second favorite is the MNAC (Museu Nacional d'art de Catalunya) in Barcelona. It's like a huge palace with fantastic views of the city. I really liked their part about the Antique which I felt was very inspiring.

WhiteLinen - can we change the title of this thread to: La Musée - Fashion in the Museum, and move it to the Art & Design thread under "visualizing fashion"?

I believe this is a very worthwhile thread, because the history of fashion for men, women and children is a fascinating subject that should generate a lively, resourceful debate for tFS. There is such an extraordinary knowledge base here, and a visit to any museum for its fashion finds is invaluable and interesting.

There are always incredible accessories and some clothing available at museum shops, usually at fairly reasonable prices. And the purchase contributes toward the maintenance of these museums. It is rare that a fashionable item from a museum is already trendy, a huge plus in my look book.

These are my constant museum haunts in New York that are well worth checking out periodically online, and certainly a wonderful experience in person!

You're so lucky to have such great places around you! The art center here isn't too interesting...

Musee de Moyen Age (Cluny) in Paris is a real gem if you're into the Middle Ages, very worthwhile visiting.

Victoria & Albert for me too because everytime I go there I find a whole new section I've never seen before. I've spent many a day there researching for various projects. They also do amazing exhibitions, my favourite was the "Radical Fashion" one a few years ago.

Second favourite Tate Modern because I work there and its a lot of fun. ;)

I love the Tate Modern as well:) There's a museum here (Columbus,OH) called the Wexner Center that I like to go to, it's not huge, but has very interesting exhibits. A couple years ago, Issey Miyake was given an award by them and he came and lectured and had lots of his APOC stuff on display.

Palais de Tokyo, in Paris. It's contemporary art, usually installations. And the bar / restaurant is also a great place for a break.

What a great thread!

New York: The Met and the Frick
Paris: The Picasso Museum and the Lourve
UK: The British Museum.

Victoria and Albert museum for me also, they often have wonderful exhibitions on.
