Stunning pictures, Omi! Thanks! :flower:

I can't tell you enough how I appreciate you being on the boards and providing great pictures and history! You're my favorite poster! :woot:

I wish I had a scanner and vintage pictures. I was flipping through my Iman book this morning and I wanted to scan the pics in there. There's a really beautiful one of Kiara, one of my favorites, and it also has some pages with Iman's old covers. I want them all!

Aww, thanks:flower:. I'm glad your on too. BTW are you talking about her recent make-up book? I still haven't gotten it yet, I might have too.

Any more pics of Pat Cleveland? Veronica Webb I will not tolerate. Pseudo intellectual is more like it.

Yeah, "The Beauty of Color". I bought it just for the pics because I don't even wear makeup. Yasmin, Liya, Oluchi, Naomi, and Tyra are in there, plus several lesser-known ethnic models and some actresses/singers.

Uh,oh Veronica was for a model, I love her! She wrote great articles for mags and helped charities and was a spokeswoman among other things. Of course she was still a model too, so she was still in that shallow world. She is was no Angela Davis/Maya Angelou, but she still gets love.

You know I told you I flipped though it and wasn't really hyped I may have saw Naomi but probably had the photo(s) so I didn't buy it. But what almost got me were Iman's covers in the beginning. If I would've saw more of Naomi and a few others I would've bought it right than. Maybe I didn't really look hard enough.

Ujjwala is Indian. She's a good friend of Liya. I think Liya was a bride's maid at her wedding.

Clara Benjamin. Great profile.

The first one is gorgeous. :flower:

Thank you! It's not hard to find good pics of Noemie-she is a goddess.

Thoughts!

1. I feel like I am deeply in love with Ana Bela Santos.. That face is like... my dream face for a woman:heart:

2. Noemie is so sexy. There is something so happy and carefree about every shot she takes. She is a wonder!

3. I always think that Naomi isn't really my time, but then OMIFAN shows us a pic of her and I'm like ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Hahahah she takes the best pictures!!!!!

4. I never think Liya's my type either, but she takes great pictures too. She's too... delicate for me or something.

5. Claudia Mason and Ana Paula are really hot!

6. I love those Brandi Chanel ads:heart:  God that really takes me back to a nicer time.

7. Doesn't it seem like there were so many more prominent black/African models in the 80s and 90s, or am I crazy? I'm just talking from my North American perspective here.

The bower girl-I'd have to see her w/out that animal makeup. I hate when they make us up like animals! Omi, how do you have all these pics?

I think that animalistic picture of Kersti, or a picture EXTREMELY similar to that, was shown to my social psychology class by my professor. He said he found it extremely offensive. I have to wonder if there are there pictures of white models floating around like that....

Brandi Quinones-she could have been bigger than Tyra and Naomi

Ohhhhhhhh I had another couple of questions.

There was a model who had some coverage in the 90's - very light skinned, wild hair, freckles, very full lips - she had a very crackly weird voice too. She was briefly popular because of her mixed racial heritage and exciting look. I forget her name but I loved her.

I know who you're talking about. She was posted a few pages back.

Excerpt from Essence article (2003) with Andre Leon Talley:

C.W.: You mention the impact of such Black models as Pat Cleveland, Bethann Hardison and Alva Chinn, ruling the runways. Where are we today? Besides Liya Kibede, Alek Wek and Naomi Campbell, there are few Black supermodels.
A.L.T: we have regressed. I often sit at a show and see not one Black model on the runway. Can't they find some Black girls?
C.W.: Have you addressed this with designers and editors?
A.L.T.: I write notes. I make suggestions. I can't believe it when designers say, "I couldn't find anyone" or "She didn't look right in the clothes."
C.W.: Why have so few African-Americans succeeded as top editors at fashion magazines?
A.L.T.: Vogue, Conde Nast, that's not our world. We are not the majority.
C.W.: Who do you think has great style?

I love Brandi, but bigger than Naomi NO, never! Bigger than Tyra maybe yes, that only is if she was as professional/fake as Tyra. If Brandi left the drugs alone & slacking she would've been IMO. For a time she was, but she didn't capitolize on it.
