Film Awards Season 2013-2014

All the big awards season films are being released or soon to be released, so I thought it would be a good time to start the thread. Last year's thread was one of my fave tFS threads.

To start us off, the Hollywood Reporter has highlighted their chosen few in their annual Actor/Actress Roundtable:

A lot of the press is saying this year will be super competitive. It will be interesting to see it play out, particuarly as more films get released.

At this early stage, my thoughts on who's possible for nominations and winning (highlighted in bold) for the Oscars:

Best Actress:
Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Julia Roberts or Meryl Streep (not both, for August: Osage County), Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr Banks)
Outside chance: Kate Winslet (Labor Day), Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue Is The Warmest Color)
It's going to be between Cate (dramatic chops, overdue for appreciation?) & Sandra (loved by industry and public, successful film).

Best Actor:
Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Christian Bale (American Hustle or Out of the Furnace), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), Michael B Jordan (Fruitvale Station)

My god this category is super crowded! This will be a killer race. It think Chiwetel will just nab it.

Close between Michael (shocking but stunning turn as a monster, plus has paid his dues in the industry and unfairly snubbed last year) and Jaerd Leto (very noteworthy turn).

I might be overestimating Fruitville Station, but it's one of the best reviewed films of the year and it has Harvey Weinstein behind it. I currently have August: Osage County shut out. It's gotten mixed reviews. People are tired of Meryl at the moment. And it's not clear whether Julia is back in everyone's graces. We'll see.

Does anyone else really not care for any of the big award films of 2013? I usually have at least a few that I keep my fingers crossed for but I'm kind of indifferent to everything this year.

I think Tom Hanks is going to be nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor and win Best Supporting. Cate Blanchett doesn't seem to be campaigning much but Sandra Bullock is and therefore I think Sandra could be a surprise winner. Best Actor is way too close for me to guess who is going to win but I think it's between Chiwetel Ejiofor and, if he actually gives a good performance, Leo in The Wolf of Wall Street. Best supporting actress is a close one and between Lupita, Oprah and Jennifer in my opinion. I think this is the category where there's going to be a different winner everything meaning that it will be up in the air until Oscar night. After watching The Hollywood Reporter Directors' Roundtable, I'm quite sure Cuaron is going to win it. The other directors just seemed so in awe of him.

Eh I found "Gravity" to be overrated. It's good but it's not as amazing as all the hype - have heard this from a lot of people too so I am not alone. His "Children of Men" is twice the film, in my opinion.

Can't believe - literally can't believe - Greta Grewig didn't get a nom for ISA's female lead. Craziness abounds!

Sandra was not good enough to win an oscar in that movie. Cate's roll has been something thats been talked about getting oscar nomination before the movie even came out. I think she deserves to win.

I'm so pleased to hear a lot of buzz about 12 Years a Slave, from everything I've seen about it, it's just a tour de force of a film and the cast and crew deserve the praise. One thing I'll admit I'm slightly worried about happening is that they won't nominate the lead actor, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and instead someone like Michael Fassbender will be the only male nomination. I mean, look at what happened with Django Unchained. Unfortunately, I sometimes do not have a lot of faith in those voting for the award shows. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the film industry in many cases. I haven't really herd any talk about any women helmed films being nominated for Best Director, which is a damn shame, the industry keeps dropping the ball with such things, it's rather upsetting. Maybe Haifaa al-Mansour will get a nom for Wadjda??? That would be phenomenal. Keeping my fingers crossed and my hopes up for a good film award season this year!

I'm with you on that. Gravity looked pretty and was ok, but I still don't understand all the hyperbole reviews for it. I'm a big fan of all involved (Clooney has been growing on me too, lately) but I was disappointed with the movie. Mostly because of the hype it had. Agreed about Children of Men too. A much better movie. I'll be happy to see Alfonso Cuaron nominated, but if Gravity wins anything from the above the line categories, it'll be a crime.

I think Sandra deserves a nom for Gravity simply for sustaining an entire movie of that scale by herself. With the wrong actress, sitting through a film like that could have been tedious but Sandra made it work.

^ Especially now because the Academy seems to be making an even more concerted effort to appeal to the ~*masses IMO (and not that anything's wrong with that, per se).

I've been kind of lazy and not going out to see many of the contenders (yet), but I'll be really disappointed if Jared Leto doesn't get it for playing Rayon. He just broke my heart.

Not that it won't play a part, but it won't be the only reason. For some unexplainable reason, critics have decided that Gravity is the second coming and Sandra gave a tour de force performance. I wouldn't even be surprised if she gets a critics awards here and there.

Apparently they are giving Woody Allen the life-time achievement, Cecil B DeMille, award at the Golden Globes, but I don't think he's going to attend, in keeping with his usual avoidance of all types of awards/accolades.
