Early Oscar Buzz (2007)

wow Juno got so many nominations. While I did find it entertaining, it was definitely not Best Picture material. I guess the Academy always has to stick one cool and popular indie flick into the nominations.

Ellen Page is really good though, but I'd prolly feel a bit iffy if she wins since she's younger than me... haha. I'm just jealous okay?!!

I'm shocked Angelina is not nominated. Usually, if you get a SAG nomination, you'll get an oscar nomination but I guess not in her case. But, I doubt she really cares. Cate does not need another nomination for her rehash performance of Elizabeth and I hope Tilda Swinton wins. I'm also intrigued with the young girl from Atonement, but mainly because she looks like the oldest young girl ever...

I don't really understand Juno getting so many nominations. It was cute, but seriously, it was not that great.

And whoa at James McAvoy not being nominated.

i predict lots of no country for old men, there will be blood, sympathy votes, and either the girl from juno or the girl from atonement winning - hollywood loves that.

Oprah's Oscar Extravaganza 2008
Thursday January 24, 2008

Daniel Day-Lewis "He rarely gives interviews but we've got him."
Ruby Dee
Laura Linney
Amy Ryan
Casey Affleck

It has been a year of big names on the big screen! Now, who will take home a coveted Academy Award®? Oprah talks to your favorite Oscar nominees.

:flower:

yay for laura linney :woot:

and i agree that juno was good, i just don't like the fact that it hopped on the "little miss sunshine" bandwagon & suddenly everyone's going gaga for it. it's only good chance on winning is for diablo cody & her best original screenplay nomination.

I don't really understand Juno getting so many nominations. It was cute, but seriously, it was not that great.

This is pretty simple. Disappointing, but simple:

The Academy has practically been having a fit the past few years as a result of dwindling viewers and the loss of younger audiences. Juno will guarantee a younger and potentially larger audience. I know it sounds cynical, but with each passing year it becomes more obvious that the Oscars are as much huge cash grab as an awards ceremony, and are more in favour of the popular vote then anything.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I've been watching them every year since I was allowed to stay up that late. But it really gets more and more frustrating. I also liked Juno, but as far I'm concerned, there's nothing Oscar-worthy about it.

And I also wish that the Academy would stop being to enamored of Cate Blanchett. I think that she is a fine actress, but sometimes it seems like they're working too hard to establish her as the new Meryl.

Having said that, there's the possibility that she will follow in the footsteps of her predecessors who received two nominations, Signourney Weaver and Julianne Moore, and end up with nothing at the end of the night.

I think Blanchett is an amazing actress and deserves plaudits. I'm fine with her nom for I'm Not There - she was the best thing in it. But I don't see the point in nominating her for The Golden Age when the movie totally sucked.

Then again, that hasn't stopped the Academy elsewhere. Hence Norbit receiving a nod for Best Makeup. I've nothing against Rick Baker and Kazuhiro Tsuji but what's to stop the producers sticking "Oscar nominated" on the DVD box? This a few days after Norbit was nominated for several Razzies including Worst Picture!

Also the Supporting noms for Hal Holbrook and Ruby Dee are fairly typical of the Academy's lean towards sentimentality. Are they really the most worthy or is it just because they are both really old? (see Gloria Stuart for Titanic).

Michael Clayton is just a touch overrated for me but it's pretty well made, some very good performances and I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed Juno but Best Picture worthy? Hmmm. It's this year's Little Miss Sunshine. And the late surge for Atonement worked. I think this Oscar selection is a little better than the Bafta list which was far too Atonement-heavy.

I would have like to see some noms for Zodiac and Control but I guess they didn't get any buzz.

I agree. Fincher, I think, likes to screw around with the Academy. If it had been released in December instead of March, there would certainly be more buzz swirling around, considering the great performances and incredible cinematography from the underrated Savides. It would have been nominated for something, I'm sure.

Control is a tough sell for the Academy because the only time you're likely to get nominated for a first-time director film is if your Mike Nichols. In any case, the two lead performances were spectacular, it was well-crafted and visually stunning. But sometimes there just isn't enough room on those ballots... which can be really depressing.

I'm fine with all the Kate noms, as long as she doesn't win.

Amy Ryan has gotten everything but the GG... if she doesn't get the Oscar, there is no justice in the world. And, lets be honest, Best Actress is all about Christie and Cotillard.

^^So true,i would be happy if either of them wins(or both,ha!).

But the million dollar question is;Are Oscars really happening this year?

Marion Cotillard should win for best actress, I thought Juno was a really cute movie but Ellen Page was basically acting herself imo. I personally wouldn't find the role that challenging, most people I know has that sense of humour to some extent.

The thing about Ellen is, she sort of has that whole Jennifer Hudson thing going on- were they really acting, was it really a stretch, or were they just basically being what they are in real life in a slightly different situation in front of a camera?

Jennifer Garner was MAY-JORLY doing PR on Juno while she was in NYC doing her broadway stint ... looked like it worked to her favor. Juno is getting a MAY-JOR buzz in the award circuit.

DGA Awards:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2007
Joel & Ethan Coen - No Country For Old Men

This positions them quite nicely for the Oscars. SAGs are next.

I wish that Ben Affleck was nominated for Best Director for Gone Baby Gone. What a great, heartbreaking film!
