Early Oscar Buzz (2007)

Haha, it doesn't shock me as much...but I still think that.... ^_^ That category is so tough this year, though -- almost too many great features!

Very true. Apart from Best Actor (Day-Lewis), Actress (Christie), and Supporting Actor (Bardem) all the other awards are looking pretty split.

Best Picture- Atonement vs. NCFOM
Best Supporting Actress- Amy Ryan vs. Cate Blanchett
Best Director- Schanbel vs. Coens
Animated Film- Ratatouille vs. Persepolis
Original Score- Jonny Greenwood vs. Dario Marianelli

Screenplay at the Oscars, however, is split between adapted and original, so I think both the Coens and Ms. Diablo Cody will walk away winners. ^_^

 Atonement won! I must say I didn't really see that coming. Considering how all the critics and guild awards have gone it's almost a snub for the Coens. But Atonement has gone down very well outside the US, opinion within seems to be more muted.

But this award puts Atonement back in contention for the big one at the Oscars. And I'm pretty darn positive it will do well at the Baftas in the run-up.

hahaha
atonement won?
ahahah

everytime i peak in on these awards they never fail to make me laugh. it's all a huge farce. but -- good for marion coiillard (played piaf in la vie en rose) and too bad for casey affleck...his performance as well the assassination for jesse james deserves more recognition. ahwells.

goodjob everyone on their predictions. :]

Sweeney will definitely get a nomination for Best Picture, simply because they always throw in one comedy or musical and I think we can lock in NCFOM, There Will Be Blood, the unfortunate hideously acted mess that was Atonement, so that's three rather sobering dramas. The Academy is sure to pick some sort of comedy or musical to round it out. So I'm putting a lock on Sweeney getting the nomination.

Best Actor is between Depp (who will get his award, I think) and Day-Lewis. Depp's never got his and the academy likes to award actors for going out of their norm (his first musical, which he nailed) even for lackluster performances if it means they right their wrongs (see Bill Murray LOSING the award he should've won for Lost in Translation to Sean Penn in Mystic River. Still the biggest mistake by the academy, for sure). I hope Emile Hirsch gets a nomination because he carried Into the Wild, which I didn't think he could do from his previous performances, but he was simply stunning in that role. His chance of winning is astronomical and of even getting a nom, but it is a Sean Penn flick and the movie was really well-received, so I hope he at least gets some credit for the fact his acting saved that movie, not the direction.

Actress needs to go to Julie Christie who is so phenom in AFH that it is ridic. Yet again Keira sneaks in a nom because the movies from the year had weak female leads. Hopefully the academy will again see she is flat, lackluster, boring, has the same facial expression the entire film, and in no way is a decent actress (of course this is my opinion, but I'll never forgive her for ruining Lizzie B, she needs to stick to action blockbusters. She is just impossible to take as a serious actress because of her gape-mouthed pout). Marion Cotillard is the dark horse, but it should really between her and Christie for their powerful performances.

I'm surprised NCFOM hasn't received more in the way of accolade. It's a tote snub to the Coen brothers. :\

If Diving Bell and Butterfly doesn't win for best foreign, I'll probably have a heart attack from surprise and die.

If Diving Bell and Butterfly doesn't win for best foreign, I'll probably have a heart attack from surprise and die.

I'd better heat up the defibrillator and start trying to resuscitate because The Diving Bell and The Butterfly is not eligible for Oscar nomination in that category.

But perfect timing! The Academy has released the long-list of Foreign Film nominees. Hmmm, don't know what to make of this except to say I've not seen any of them! :ninja:

Austria, “The Counterfeiters,” Stefan Ruzowitzky, director
Brazil, “The Year My Parents Went on Vacation,” Cao Hamburger, director
Canada, “Days of Darkness,” Denys Arcand, director
Israel, “Beaufort,” Joseph Cedar, director
Italy, “The Unknown Woman,” Giuseppe Tornatore, director
Kazakhstan, “Mongol,” Sergei Bodrov, director
Poland, “Katyn,” Andrzej Wajda, director
Russia, “12,” Nikita Mikhalkov, director
Serbia, “The Trap,” Srdan Golubovic, director

oscars

^The exclusion of TDBatB is so unfortunate :( This is the first year that I have not seen any of the foreign film nominees, so I know how you feel Chaky!

^^ for the first time in my entire life, i haven't seen any of those Foreign Film nominees this year :cry::cry:

maybe they didn't include The Diving Bell and The Butterfly because it's a shoe in

Ironically, everyone was going on and on about whether La Vie En Rose or Persepolis was going to get the French nom for Best Foreign Language film... and neither are even a possibility, though I'm sure Marion Cotillard will get an actress nom, and Persepolis will easily be an animated feature contender.

And why isn't that Romanian film on there? I've heard so much about it...

Oh so I am totally dead then! Hahaha.

I wonder why it isn't being included. Does anyone know?

I wonder why it isn't being included. Does anyone know?

Each country is also only allowed to submit one film for consideration (yeah, the rules in this category are really dumb). France's official submission was Persepolis and it looks like that didn't make it through to the next round of voting. Also I think that The Diving Bell and The Butterfly is an American co-production which means it doesn't meet the Academy's definition of a Foreign Film so it wasn't eligible anyway.

i have only seen the serbian entry (The Trap/Klopka) which is narratively quite interesting but the unreasonable overabundance of (beautiful) long shots dampens the suspense and overall atmosphere, a few significant snips in the editing room would have me rooting for this much much more
well worth a watch in any case

I'm watching La Vie En Rose tonight...I sort of fell in love with Marion while watching her on the Oscar Roundtable discussion at Newsweek...very charming way about her.
