Early Oscar Buzz (2007)

BAFTA Best Film Not In The English Language nominees

The Diving Bell And The Butterfly
The Kite Runner
La Vie En Rose
Lust, Caution
The Lives Of Others

BBC News

No surprises on this list. This nominees for this category have been decided by an expert committee this year. They've been announced early so voters have time to watch them all (DVDs for all five were sent before Christmas). The rest of the nominees are announced on January 16th.

My current fave is The Lives Of Others but I've only seen Diving Bell of the others so far so that may change.

I just read that none of the actors are attending GG. Is that true? If it is, I'm pissed because I NEED my fashion fix.

Well the actors are obviously under pressure from the studios to go out and promote their movies. But many of them wish to boycott the awards in support of the WGA. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

So it now looks like the Golden Globe televised ceremony is cancelled if this report is right:

So the Hollywood writers strike can now claim its first awards show casualty. I'm hearing from my sources that NBC will not be broadcasting the big Golden Globes show as planned for January 13th. Nor will even a full frills unbroadcasted dinner party be held, either. Instead, a stripped down news telecast will be aired exclusively by NBC News from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, site of what was supposed to be the big show, where the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will announce the Golden Globe winners who won't be present in the room.

^That's a huge setback for the studios...and such a shame because there are so many good films this year! :( I don't know if any particular film/thespian has a secure grasp on any award.

I don't know if any particular film/thespian has a secure grasp on any award.

Yeah you never can tell with the Oscars, they sometimes throw a curveball but I'd say most of the nominees are pretty much locked at this stage.

Best Picture
No Country for Old Men

 This movie is just awesome.

Best Young Actress
Nikki Blonsky - Hairspray
Saoirse Ronan - Atonement

 Are they serious? Ronan was superb.

Best Foreign Language Film
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Yes, I liked this very much. Shame about the Oscar rules for foreign film ruling out so many great movies.

Best Composer
Jonny Greenwood - There Will Be Blood
B) I'm really hoping Jonny gets an Oscar nom and wins. It would be really cool to see the guy out of Radiohead with an Oscar.

I so hope Casey Affleck gets something for his perfomance in The Assassination of Jesse James, I just can't get over how fantastic he was in that role.

The Directors Guild has spoken:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2007
Paul Thomas Anderson - There Will Be Blood
Joel Coen & Ethan Coen - No Country For Old Men
Tony Gilroy - Michael Clayton
Sean Penn - Into The Wild
Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell And The Butterfly

Winners are announced January 26th.

DGA

These are usually pretty good predictors of the Best Picture nominees at the Oscars. Last year I think they got 4/5 right.

The Writers Guild has taken a brief wander away from the picket line to announce their 2008 noms.

The Guild nominations are pretty solid indicators of how the Academy might vote. The Producers Guild announce next week I think. So far based on the Guild nominations already, Best Picture is looking like:

  1. No Country for Old Men (SAG, WGA, ACE, DGA)
  2. Michael Clayton (SAG, WGA, ACE, DGA)
  3. Into the Wild (SAG, WGA, ACE, DGA)
  4. There Will Be Blood (DGA, WGA, ACE)
  5. Juno (WGA, ACE) / The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (DGA, WGA)
The last spot is still up for grabs and of course the Academy can throw a curve ball and put in something unexpected. From the Guilds it's looking like Atonement is out of the running but it is the sort of thing the Academy likes so maybe it could sneak in.

Haha, it doesn't shock me as much...but I still think that the novel was better than the film ^_^ That category is so tough this year, though -- almost too many great features!
