Foreign Movie Recommendations

So I probably haven't seen as many foreign films as many of you- but I'm currently chipping away at my list of movies I've been wanting to see. As of right I have a few suggestions which currently stand out in my mind.^_^

Amelie (2001)- This is pretty much one film I think any foreign movie lover has to see. A good "beginner" film to watch if your new to subtitles and such. So quirky and real... I totally relate to Amelie.

Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) (2010)- I just watched this and I have to say it was suburb. I really like watching films made in India and this one really stood out to me from the one's I've seen so far. And Prateik was a standout (I can't believe it was his first acting role)- he's this really gorgeous man but really managed to capture his character beautifully as someone who's ambitious and modest about it at the same time. It's about four individuals living in Mumbai and how they impact one another. But it's not just about that, I think it's also a story about Mumbai itself, showing some of the various sides to the city.

Whale Rider (2003)- This New Zealand film is probably one of the first foreign subtitled films I ever remember seeing. And it had such an impact on me. So, so beautiful. Gets me crying every time. And Whale Rider taught me a bit about the Maori culture which I didn't know anything about before I saw it.

"The Celebration" (danish)
"Run Lola Run" (german)
"All About My Mother", "Volver", "El Orfanato" (spanish)
"Central Station" (brasil)
"Eat, Drink, Man, Woman" (taiwan) - this will make you hungry!!
"Rang de Basanti" (india)

"Persona" (swedish, bergman)
"Fanny & Alexander" (swedish, bergman) - long but phenomenal.
"Jules et Jim" (french, truffaut)
"Breathless" (french, godard)

there are so many, many more, but those are some.

The Host - Korean, post-modern, funny-horror monster film
Kairo - fabulous, atmospheric Japanese horror film: a bad American version (Pulse) was made of course, but do see the original; the "forbidden room" scene is ULTRA scary imo.

Faust. (2011)
Caught this Russian film yesterday at a film festival, I ran as fast as I could and still got 30 minutes late so I obviously missed the 'pact' but it was still worth sweating for . Very cinematic.. beautifully shot, very intimate performances, time flies as you're watching it. I tried to read Goethe's book when I was younger but I was a little too young for it and even though I always try not to see films before actually reading the books and hesitated a little about watching this, I still think the film helps to pave a more tangible path into the book itself, if that makes sense. Totally recommend it.

I will continue with my Russian "tour de force" with Elena tomorrow. Has anyone seen it? not expecting much but these Russians always surprise me.

Also, any thoughts on The kid with a bike? I saw it got a Golden Globe nomination, so it will probably get some more buzz, and I did like L'Enfant. It was screened here a couple days ago but totally missed it. Guess will have to find it online. :innocent:

blu-ray.com

One of my favorites is Marketa Lazarova, which just had a new release from the Czech National Film Archive

^ I'll look out for that one.

I know Let the Right One In is a really well known film, but I really can't recommend it enough. It's just stunning.

"Eat, Drink, Man, Woman" (taiwan) - this will make you hungry!!

The first scene still makes me drool - I watch it whenever I have a not-so-appetizing meal  ... whereas the last scene just makes me weep, I could imagine the possibility of me and my dad being in that situation in the future. :ninja:

"Persona" (swedish, bergman)
"Fanny & Alexander" (swedish, bergman) - long but phenomenal.
"Jules et Jim" (french, truffaut)
"Breathless" (french, godard)

I loved all of these, especially Persona. Wonderful use of lighting, I could frame every scene.

Some more of my faves off the top of my head:
La cérémonie (1995) - riveting from start to finish, though the cast alone is worth the watch... I could see Jil Sander credits and I'm really curious which clothes did she make (I guessed Jacqueline Bisset's outfits )
Autumn Sonata (1978) - Bergman x2! see: Persona
Elevator to the Gallows (1958)
The Piano Teacher (2001)
Raise the Red Lantern (1991)
Ju Dou (1990)
Farewell My Concubine (1993)
Days of Being Wild (1990) - loved it as much as In the Mood for Love (2000)
