Looks like McQueen tapped into the mood as well, but done in black it looks surprisingly modern.

for that particular discussion - came across this:

Revival of an earlier Gothic style

It was in contrast to this "modernistic rebellion" (Panofsky) that the International Gothic style entered the lists at the end of the century. We have already established that the people who commissioned the works of art - being in an insecure position - tried to revive nostalgically their past greatness in all aspects of life. This endeavour led to a conscious revival of an earlier phase of the Gothic style. (Thus, the International Gothic style, which preceded the cult of antiquity of the Renaissance, was the first period at the end of the Middle Ages that was founded upon a revived historical ideal.) "From the very start the International Style contained seeds of rebellion against the literal realism that had formed a basic constituent of art in the preceding generation. It looked back with nostalgia to a time before the fall of man into realism . . . The new generation, having eaten of the fruit of realism, could not return to medieval concepts in complete earnestness. Like the art of the seventies and eighties, the International Style is no longer Gothic, but it is post-Gothic. It is not so much a last flowering or waning, as a romantic revival of the High Middle Ages." (Krautheimer)

...this being the forteenth century, but I realized you could say similar things about some of the modern "references" to the different classical periods. Especially in referendum to the past BALENCIAGA collection.

Some baroque/rococo influence at Gaultier homme (though I'm not convinced that the breeches will take off, not for men anyway)

and I remembered this editorial from Vogue Italia that took baroque, rococo and even some neoclassical inspirations and kind of threw it all together into a really great mix.

I'm scared of this trend. If it goes mainstream, I think it will be one of those things we look back on and go: "what was I thinking." :p

baroque/rococo are unique influences for fashion and if applied in an unconventional manner it can be timeless.

This is why I love love love this forum! When I discovered it I thought, wow people who are truly interested in similar topics...

I love this look - gorgeous - In design school, I made a gigantic rococo paper dress!!

And if trends arise and are embraced like gauchos, platform shoes, jodphurs or tan leather - I'm sure we can effortlessly embrace pouf sleeves, cravats, intricately embellished fabrics and more of these gorgeous characteristics!

I don't foresee the return of panniers though:p

i frikin love this style! oh my goodness, this is fantastic. edgy history!

i really want dark eyebrows and light hair, like the photos on the first page.

one of my favorite threads. wish to hell i at least had something decent to contribute to it other than praise.
