She came along at a time when models were increasingly bland and without personality. This continues even today. Gemma Ward may be pretty to fashion people but a typical person on the street would probably call her ugly and boring. Ditto for Hana, Daria, Eugenia, and all the current top girls. Gisele has a vibrant personality and a vibrant chest (perfect for capturing the attention of the Maxim and FHM contingent) which makes her the perfect candidate for supermodeldom.

Reasons?
Right place right time (i.e Brazilian trend) hyped up by Anna Wintour, 'big' boobs, eye catching walk, vibrant personality and unfortunately Leonardo Dicaprio.

[/quote]So well put.
I'm glad someone mentioned the Leonardo DiCaprio thing - I read a while ago that Carmen Kass and Gisele came into the modelling scene about the same time; who is more of a household name?

Not many of the supermodels have not made their name based partly on their significant other, which helps if they're an actor or someone of significant influence.

Dicaprio in my opinion surpassed all the hype over looks that Depp faced by light years. Dicaprio's celebrity status post-Titanic became ridiculous beyond belief. I personally, in my young lifetime, have never seen any other star become so hyped up like he did.
