Grace Wales Bonner - Designer, Creative Director of Hermès Menswear

I think this is a good appointment. A lot of people here are not giving her enough credit; she has built a substantial commercial brand, rather than taking a pathway through internships and placements at major labels. That doesn't mean she isn't capable of something more high fashion. We've seen modern streetwear from her because she made a business choice, but if we're going by something like pedigree, she's not that different from designers like Daniel Lee or Mathieu Blazy. She's also shown us a more refined or luxurious application of her taste, since she did that re-imagination of the New Look for MGC's Dior (which was fairly nice, I'd say). Certainly she will have to present something distinct from her own brand, but I see no reason to believe she isn't capable of that.

I'll also say, the thinly-veiled racism & misogyny here are gross? The comments about streetwear, comparing her to Pharrell at LV, etc. Like I said above, she's a very well-trained, award-winning designer. She is not coming from another field or profession, and she doesn't just make tracksuits. If some white twink had her CV no one would be questioning it.
thanking for saying it out loud regarding the thinly-veiled racism & misogyny it's no different IRL corporate fashion world or on set .

I can't think of a single new designer lately who hasn't been raked over the coals here, but there is rational commentary and then there is questionable commentary.

On the other hand, if you have a serious point to make about intolerance or discrimination, maybe don't use language like "some white twink" in the process -- or go ahead and do you, but know that you are undermining your own intentions.

I do, factually, see an unusually high proportion of track pants, by the way:
-- but I am not using that as the basis for skepticism about the talent and perspective she will bring to bear on her new job.

I wish Grace the best at Hermes and I hope she brings its menswear a long overdue breath of fresh air.

Anyone who thinks "some white twink" is a term of intolerance or discrimination needs to get a grip. Gay white men are the norm in fashion; the power dynamics are simply different.

If that was done by a small brand, Adidas would have been in court suing them already!

maybe they send a warning this happens as well even chanel does it to other brands all the big law firms that work for big brands know each other in one way or another it can be even a email to highlight an disapproval of certain product with similar IP etc etc

This is the only move that I'm excited about, but only because I'm actually familiar w/ her clothes. They sold her menswear at the local Saks, and it looked a lot better IRL than it does on the runway. The materials, the finishing, the construction, the tailoring...✔️✔️✔️✔️ I can only imagine how much she can take her work to the next level w/ any and all resources that Hermes can give her. I'm excited.

I was just looking online @ her Adidas. Those shoes look much, much slicker than the Sacai Nike's and McQueen Puma's from way back when. Do I want to see designer tennis-shoes from Hermes? No, not really, but in her hands, I suppose it wouldn't be that bad.

you do know hermes makes and sells lots of sneakers for women and men :-)

its a sportswear luxury house they come from horse riding saddles not couture dresses

expensive does not equal gala or cocktail

even margiela redesigned a famous hermes sneaker in his time there.

yes, it’s interesting to me people seem so unaware of Hermes current/typical offerings? a simple glance at their site shows 3 men’s jogging pants, 7 women’s, and 100-something different sneakers. 15 of their 35 dresses currently in stock are shirt/t-shirt/pocket dresses. It’s still different than her own brand (duh) but it’s not like such garments are beneath them.

like its totally more rare hermes does hardcore evening or tailoring in regulsr or fashion colection .... it's mostly by The Hermes Special Orders service for clients these dressy stuff suits and shirt and ofcourse leather rtw and even special order sports wear and knits if part of the program

5 BESPOKE MAGIC TRICKS

the silk dresses are paired with riding boots etc there is always a leaning towards being active or she can go on a horse at any time lol

God forbid we should just try to treat everyone with a bit of respect.

Disrepect does not have to be discrimination to be objectionable. But go ahead and roll your eyes and write an essay about how wrong I am.

I like lounge pants as long as they are luxe (idk if they are worth distinguishing from "track pants" but if anything they are even more casual?). I have pairs from Marc Jacobs, Burberry, and Alanui. Maybe LP or BC one day; Cucinelli did some really sumptuous ones in ribbed-knit cashmere but they were out of my price range.

honestly in chamere or in nylon or jersey it's all sports wear related that morphed in new categories like lounge wear or athleisure etc for me and of course one can choose a lux version for travel or being or vacation or home or dog walking instead of a loud printed one etc

a birkin can look as cheap and loud and chic and demure :-) same for track pants or lounge wear depends on who what etc etc
