Greta Gerwig

Huh, you think? I thought her character in Mistress America was so different to anything she had done before both superficially and in terms of characterisation. She and Frances couldn't be less alike.

Not to mention she wrote co-wrote both screenplays which makes it more impressive. To me, at least.

How are the characters in Frances Ha and Mistress America different? Both grown women with immature problems who can't get their lives together, floating by in NYC, some quirky awkward spastic behavior :vomit:

She just makes me appreciate Lena Dunham all the more, because she's dealing with the same sort of hipster/millennial problems in NYC, but hits on develops and hits on emotions that feel more believable and real.

Maybe they share a similarity in immaturity, but I found Frances to be self-aware and at least tried to be a better version of herself. Brooke was a deluded wannabe Yuppie.

I guess it's a case of seeing things differently. That's what I love about film (or the arts in general).

^ Agreed! Thanks for hashing it out with me.

I guess I haven't unsubscribed from this thread, so maybe it's a sign I haven't given up all hope for her quite yet.

totally yohji.

frances is a very likeable character; she just can't find her way. but she knows her own self, and she grows.

brooke was a very grating and annoying character, superficial. and the lola kirke character, tracy i think (?), calls her out on all of it.

i feel like brooke is more indicative of baumbach's influence as he usually writes rather unlikeable but relatable - on some level - characters.

whereas i feel like frances came more from greta's mumblecore roots.

seems like greta is due for a backlash though, so i am expecting it. personally i think she's charming.

but i have heard heatheranne's complaint a lot, and i do think it has merit as she tends to play similar "types" of characters. but how is that different than diane keaton or meg ryan perhaps? maybe she's this generation's comedic female actress? and frankly she's miles better than the ones through the 90s and early 2000s if that's the case.

i feel like she has depth to her and apparently in "maggie's plan" we see more dramatic work within the comedy. i look forward to her expanding.

but, well, katherine hepburn did mainly comedy, and mainly similar characters, and i love her too!

interesting conversation indeed. :flower: i am interjecting after the fact though; i hope y'all don't mind. :P

^ Nope, don't mind, civil debate is good (and too rare) around tFS these days :flower:

Curious what you mean by this though?

I understand this argument with women or men who are super famous, a la Jennifer Lawrence, fall into this "due for a backlash" phenomenon -- but to me Gerwig is not there so if she's receiving criticism is probably for an argument with some merit.

^ jennifer lawrence, anne hathaway and gwenyth paltrow all faced backlash due to over-saturation in the mainstream market.

gerwig has been an indie darling for years! she did a whole lot of mumblecore work (e.g. hannah takes the stairs), then films like damsels in distress, lola versus, and greenberg, all before the two break-out roles we're discussing here. (not counting a couple of more mainstream turns in to rome with love, arthur, and no strings attached). so people who follow indiefilm are probably more than familiar with her and are probably more than ready to criticize her.

plus, as you've noted, she generally plays a millennial who's struggling in some way or other, and she typically acts in offbeat comedies.

so yes; there is some warrant to the criticism that she plays similar roles.

but so does j-law in all those o'russell films.

it's just that typically romance and/or comedy are critically maligned in general, so gerwig is acting in genres that already get less respect and notice.

i love her comedic self, but i certainly wouldn't mind seeing her explore her dramatic chops a little further. she showed elements of that side in both frances ha and greenberg.

finally, i also think women actors/creatives experience backlash way more than men do and frankly i think that's bullsh*t!
