^ jennifer lawrence, anne hathaway and gwenyth paltrow all faced backlash due to over-saturation in the mainstream market.
gerwig has been an indie darling
for years! she did a whole lot of mumblecore work (e.g.
hannah takes the stairs), then films like
damsels in distress, lola versus, and
greenberg, all before the two break-out roles we're discussing here. (not counting a couple of more mainstream turns in
to rome with love, arthur, and
no strings attached). so people who follow indiefilm are probably more than familiar with her and are probably more than ready to criticize her.
plus, as you've noted, she generally plays a millennial who's struggling in some way or other, and she typically acts in offbeat comedies.
so yes; there is some warrant to the criticism that she plays similar roles.
but so does j-law in all those o'russell films.
it's just that typically romance and/or comedy are critically maligned in general, so gerwig is acting in genres that already get less respect and notice.
i love her comedic self, but i certainly wouldn't mind seeing her explore her dramatic chops a little further. she showed elements of that side in both
frances ha and
greenberg.
finally, i also think women actors/creatives experience backlash way more than men do and frankly i think that's bullsh*t!
