vanityfairSnce breaking into the business, model Hanne Gaby Odiele has kept Fashion Week’s moveable feast of street style spunky, consistently shaking up the usual off-duty-model uniform of calculated casual. But as she zips from venue to venue in her moonage daydream ensembles, her feet, as she tells it, have been killing her.
In swooped Matt Bernson, the Tribeca-based shoe designer whose creations resemble his neighborhood’s lofts—understated, refined, and built to last. Together, Bernson and Odiele cooked up a capsule collection of shoes she and her fellow catwalkers could trot in pain-free: basket-weave loafers with a creeper-inspired, neon-speckled cork platform; neoprene slides; and a croc-embossed sandal with a fat foam wedge fit for long walks on the lunar surface.
“I was thinking about something [you] could wear all summer,” Odiele said. “Something that [you] would be able to destroy.”
At the launch party for this very limited collection—where fellow models and ideal customers Anna Ewers, Binx Walton, Kasia Struss, and others sipped champagne and supped from a taco truck parked outside—Odiele and her design partner discussed shoes destroyed and fetishized, and which of Odiele’s colleagues is the fastest runner in the game.
VF.com: What was the last pair of shoes that you destroyed?
Hanne Gaby Odiele: Docs! I love Docs. I use them for festivals and going on camping trips and stuff. They’re not perfectly, honestly, at all. The sole is not perfect because sometimes it’s slippery, but I’ve just always had a pair since I was probably like, eight, or even younger.
Matt Bernson: For me, it was a Common Projects black lace-up sneaker with a gum wraparound sole. They’re so expensive. But I wore them every single day for like, years. I still have them, but I would not want to wear them now.
Who’s the fastest model?
Odiele: It must be some Russian girl. Or it must be Mariacarla [Boscono]! I think Mariacarla might be the fastest!
But who would win in a race between Karlie Kloss and Joan Smalls?
Odiele: Oh, Mariacarla would win over all those guys. Between Joan and Karlie—how many meters are we talking about? It really depends on the day. They would be neck-and-neck for sure, depending on how many blisters they have from the week before.
You have an enviable shoe wardrobe. Do you fetishize shoes?
Odiele: I have a display of shoes. Instead of books, I put my shoes on my book display. And I never wear them, and no one’s allowed to touch them, or even look at them.
Bernson: Shoes are almost like sculptural art, which is why people like to put their shoes on display.
Odiele: I hoard them.
Matt, before you started your line, you were working construction. How has that shaped your designs?
Odiele: For a straight guy, he knows all about making a woman feel comfortable in his shoes.
Bernson: I have to listen to Hanne and my wife and my mom. They’re very opinionated, very vocal. A huge part of it is listening and interpreting what you imagine they want, and if they don’t like it, they let you know.
wmagazineWhen she’s not walking runways in New York, London, Milan or Paris, model Hanne Gaby Odiele is trotting—and often dancing—around the global party circuit. Chic, wearable, shoes are, as one might imagine, essential to her girl-on-the-go style. And so she’s dreamed up a collection of sleek slip-ons and cork-soled creepers in collaboration with footwear designer Matt Bernson. “If Hanne’s shoes hurt, she’d be like, ‘What the f—, Matt!’” the designer joked on Tuesday night at a party celebrating their collaboration. Fellow models Grace Mahary, Kasia Struss, and Mirte Maas were in attendance at the party, which Bernson hosted in his Tribeca boutique. “My inspiration was a lot of my friends,” says Odiele, who invited fellow mannequins Tilda Lindstam, Charlotte Free, and Ju Xiaowen to star alongside her in the collection’s campaign. “I thought: if they had a to-go shoe for the summer, how would that shoe look?” Cute and comfy, it seems.
interviewmagazineLast night, Hanne Gaby Odiele and Matt Bernson fêted the launch of their first-ever collaboration at the accessories designer's airy Tribeca duplex boutique.
Odiele, the Belgian fashion model, is perhaps best known as the unofficial queen of model-off-duty street style. Need proof? A quick Instagram or Tumblr search of her name brings up enough endless scrolls of whimsical and brightly colored outfits to stage an entire fashion month roster (see: dreamy Dries van Noten coats, new and vintage Balenciaga statement pieces, Comme des Garçons 2-D shorts, and tons of Technicolor separates).
It's no surprise then, that Odiele has taken her knack for pairing of fresh-off-the-runway demi-couture with equally eye-catching thrift store finds a step further. More than one year in the making, the Hanne Gaby x Matt Bernson collection is an abbreviated sampling of the type of understated, "sporty, but dressy" footwear today's urban sophisticates crave. Best of all, the look book images (co-starring Odiele's stylish model pals Tilda Lindtsam, Charlotte Free, and Xiao Wen Ju) were lensed by the heir-apparent of street style photography, Tommy Ton.
"From our very first meeting, Hanne brought a huge amount of creativity to the table, which made the project very exciting," Bernson shared. "She also brought her strong sense of high-end style and individuality—that handmade quality with a touch of futurism that she does so well."
One of the standout styles is a printed croc sling-back with zips at either side of the foot. "I call these the 'wine spill,'" Odiele said of her merlot colored flatform sandals; for her chic affair, she paired them with a bias-cut Balenciaga blouse and T by Alexander Wang trousers slit to the knee.
"These are shoes for different days of the week," Odiele declared. "They're all very comfortable, which is good, especially when you have too many blisters. All the styles are flat, but still chic," she continued. "You can wear them to the office or to the beach...either way you're good to go!"
style.comOver in West Chelsea at the Hotel Americano, Document Journal threw a dinner of its own. Guests included the contributors to and supporters of the biannual magazine’s latest issue: Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, Jason Wu, Jen Brill, Adam Selman, Mel Ottenberg, and Maripol.
Hanne Gaby Odiele, just back from California, shared her tips for doing Coachella the right way: “It’s best to go to the parties and stay by the pool during the day. Don’t go to the music until night, because during the day it’s too hot and there are too many people. The VIP section is good for the bathrooms, but outside the VIP are the most fun people. I really want to go to Burning Man in August, but it’s right before fashion week, so I’m not sure. I’ve gone in the past and stayed in a tent the whole week!”
“It’s like the Kors party, but sloppier,” said one guest at the Lady Gaga x Alexander Wang after-party. The late-night celebration was cohosted by the singer and the designer at the Diamond Horseshoe, the subterranean portion of the Paramount Hotel in midtown. Kristen Wiig got things going, lifting up her long yellow gown to hit the dance floor first. But it didn’t take long for the fairly quiet gathering to transform into a full-on rager, with Wang and Hanne Gaby Odiele holding sparklers and bopping up and down.

Long before she was a street-style fixture, Odiele was stomping down the Raf Simons runways as early as 2009. While many designers love her energetic presence and life-of-the-party personality, Simons likely connects with her on a personal level—both are Belgian citizens.
