Health Food Beginner

^yeah, and I'm a bit envious, coz I can't even have ANY chocolate due to my allergy towards cocoa and many other foods:(

allergies are very tough- I've had to stop eating dairy. After about six months I felt a lot healthier and noticed positive changes in my body- both the way i felt and looked on the outside.

About healthy eating- I do try and eat healthy, but it seems like there are no certainties- everyone has an opinion about what is healthy and often times dieticians/ nutritionists/fitness freaks all contradict one another. Its so hard to know if you are doing the right thing! Makes me feel a little hopeless :(

^ My moto if it makes you glow, it's healthy. Those health nuts annoy me too because they tell you to eat a certain way but they're skin doesn't glow and some do not look like they are following their own rules.

I say, stick to water. Protein, low dairy, I cut out milk, soda, chips, and greasy stuff and high fructose and hydrogenated stuff. Basically all natural stuff works for me =).

Don't drink diet sodas. If you're going to treat yourself with sodas, get the real deal. They're "better" than the diet ones.

Spinach is a good vegetable right?

^ Yes, it's an excellent one ... especially if it's cooked

And I agree about soda. If you're getting all the calories & you're conscious of what you're doing, you're going to drink it much more moderately. When I drank it, it was the regular kind, but I love that I've been able to stop altogether. Just try it for 30 days ... if you're like me, you won't go back.

I heard from a lot of people that when they drank diet soda they gained weight. One girl in college lost like 10 pounds when she stopped drinking diet soda (she also started eating healthier in general). i think that this is so INTERESTING. And it makes me think that diet soda is doing some verrrrry strange stuff to our bodies.

I have a strange health food related question I think you guys might be able to answer- I love love love traditional Chinese green tea- and I like to drink it at night, but i've recently realized how caffeinated it is and it keeps me awake- any decaf brands of green that i try do NOT taste at all good- does any one have any brands of tasty decaf that they drink??
oh and sorry for writing a novel just now :D:D

i think it's the sugar substitute that our body don't like.

I've been thinking about the connection between nutrition and mental dispositions lately.. and while I've always been a fairly healthy eater, I'm thinking yeast has been causing problems in my body.

Has anyone read "The Yeast Connection" or read about Candida bacteria overgrowth?

Supposedly there are many nasty symptoms of having too much "bad" bacteria (caused by too much yeast, sugar, alcohol, or taking antibiotics or birth control), including headaches, brain fog, lethargy, fatigue and overall blue moods.

So what's your experience with carbs in relation to mood? I feel much energized when I'm taking probiotics (fighting the yeast) and eating more lean proteins.

Today I had Dunkin Donuts for breakfast, gross I know, but I wasn't feeling well and had a doctor's appt and it was nearby so I went for it. Well, I got an iced coffee and decided to use REAL sugar instead of Splenda/Sweet & Low, even though I knew I was adding calories this way. My parents both just read In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan, and I am planning on it soon. When I was younger we had everything whole/natural/from scratch- nothing processed or with sugar substitute, but we've gotten away from that. I think it's much more nutritious to head back that way. Even if I was still consuming sugary caffeine-y junk in the process, at least I was making a conscience, enlightened decision!

hear hear! I do this too- I always feel so healthy after putting REAL SUGAR in my coffee at starbucks and not opting for splenda

Okay can someone help me I know this is tough question to answer maybe but I want to eat healthy...I am naturally thin so I am used to eating a lot of bad foods like chips and cookies. But I notice my metabolism is slowing a little and I am still thin but not skinny like I used to be so what is just a good plan to eat every day? Like what should I have for breakfast, for lunch, for dinner, and for snacks? Sort of like what they show in the Harpers Bazaar magazines lol like an eating plan for every day to be healthy do you guys know what I am saying? I just have NO idea what the right proportions are especially in America when everything is bigger.

Also I do not mean what is a diet to lose weight really I just mean to maintain my figure and be overall healthier. But if I lost a little weight that would be okay just not too much

I would take out some healthy recipe books from the library to get ideas of what to eat, but generally speaking natural foods that aren't processed are good options for one's overall everyday diet. I think I've actually seen something online on the right portion sizes for different foods, but I have to see where I saw that. And when it comes to portions, it's a great idea of use smaller plates since it's easy for someone to end up putting too much food on their plate on a big one since there's more space, obviously. It's easy when you use a medium size plate when you put the different foods (like a protein and a carb) to end up with about the right portion of each. And adding veggies and fruits to meals is a good way to make sure you get more of them throughout the day. I even add blueberries to salad sometimes.

Cook in olive oil, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables,
Certain things are good to know:
even innocent looking biscuits have a lot of OIL :ninja:
i discovered that instant noodles are FRIED before packing
salad dressings can be evil

what carbs do you eat?
I fear them so much .
I need another option beside whole-grain bread , potatoes and noodles.
any ideas ?

joiedemode, I am the same in that although I've always been naturally skinny I feel my metabolism is starting to slow. I just cut out the extra things, snack on healthy snacks like seeds and a few nuts, or low carb fruits such as strawberries. However, the biggest change I have made is to join a gym! I'd never been the exercising type but I am now loving it. I definately notice the difference in how I feel.

I decided to cut out sugar.:ninja: It's been 3 days now, I'm so proud of myself, because I used to have at least a chocolate a day.:innocent:
The next step I'm going to take is reducing carbs and eat more vegetable and fruit. Wish me luck, I'm sceptical though (you know, been there done that:lol:).

^I'm going to try and reduce my intake of gluten, which means no bread,so I'm feeling you're pain

Speaking of splenda and diet sodas, i think it's hilarious when i am out to get some burgers and fries (which is rare) and i see a fat person ordering large amounts of food and then asks for a diet soda. it cracks me up. i want to say "do you think that diet soda is REALLY gonna make a difference? you might as well go for the real thing"

LOL
