Health Food Beginner

no. i think i can eat fruits on and on and on..

Not true, actually.

There is a reason that you are to eat more veggies than fruits... sugar in fruits do add up... and believe it or not, there is plenty of sugar in such fruits as pineapple, etc.

I'm not sure about that...but I've heard that you shouldn't eat fruit in the evenings.

Some fruits register very high on the glycemic index, and send your blood suger levels rocketing, e.g. Watermelon which is >70 I believe, but then again it's low in calories. Fruit is great of course, some berries are very high in anti-oxidants but then again they're mostly carbs, and very high in sugar as members have posted above. Of course no diet is complete without fruit, just pick the right ones. Apples and oranges are always a safe option in my opinion. Everything in moderation is key, too much of anything is bad.

I do know for sure. :flower: I study nutrition.

As far as not eating fruits in the evenings, I am unsure where you have heard that? It's true that you shouldn't eat a couple of hours before going to bed, as doing so may interrupt sleep.

i've heard the no fruit at night thing too from several naturopaths. i dont remember exactly but i think it had something to do with the high acidity and your body not being able to process / digest fruit as well as veges after as early as 3pm

Thank you for replying.
I eat a bannana most mornings after my tost, i have my dinner and a small bowl of fruit with yogurt and just recently i have been having a big bowl of fruit after my tea which that could be at half 6-7 with 1 Apple 1 banna 1 orange 1,peach lots of strawberries, lots of grapes and half a tub of natural yogurt with it too . Do you think i should cut some fruit out or will this be ok?

^

I find it funny that you mention bananas.

One of my friends said that her doctor recommended not eating bananas... that they're the worst fruit to eat (I forget why)... I thought that to be quite strange, because from what I've heard they're full of many good things.

I have heard too many bananas will just constipate you.

Eating right before bed never fails to give me crazy dreams.

i eat a bit of protein before bed time and it seems to keep me asleep...

I'd eat that big bowl a bit earlier just in case :D But I think it's good that you eat a lot of fruit.

I think eating a lot of fruit is good as long as you don't replace other foods with it. And if you don't do that you'll hardly eat too much  But if you do that because you want to eat more healthily: you'd fail because fruit only isn't balanced at all, you'd only get sugar and water and a bit of vitamins. And if you do for losing weight purposes: I read somewhere that fructose is treated differently by the body and can, in excess, lead to easier weight gain. Also you'd feel bloated and the provided energy is fleeting so you'll feel weak.

everything should be takened in moderation. unless, your physician says cut or take more of, certain food groups.

I not often feel like eating fruit. I think, If I really would need more than my body would give me a signal , wouldnt it?

oh I just checked the website. The recipes look really good. I like to cook a lot lately so I will maybe try some of those out

What about adding some whole grains, like muesli or granola?

I have seen cautions against fruit juice (fiber gone, can be added sugar), but I don't think I've read a recommendation to not eat too much fruit  It tends to be really good for you ...

Now dried fruits can be another issue, they can be chock full of added sugar (and calories) ...

Don't believe that's true ... it can be full of antioxidants. Blackberries have been shown to be extremely effective topically in fighting skin cancer. Blue-purple berries are right at the top of the superfood list ...

It depends on how whacked out your body is on junk food  A lot of people's bodies are telling them it's a good idea to eat Mickey D's :P I think a lot of people's bodies are really confused ...

I find that the better food I eat, the more I want to eat healthy food

Also, if you're stressed, your body may want food that's not all that good for you, because it's going to give you, say, a serotonin boost or whatever.

I crave dark chocolate whenever I have a big mental challenge, like when I need to do something difficult at work--and I've seen the studies that explain why. Starchy potatoes have a calming effect, but they're not necessarily good for you ... it's called comfort food for a reason

This reminds me of an article I read in The New York Times last week, which discussed a study in which men and women were presented with a variety of snacks while solving anagrams. Here's an excerpt I thought was interesting.

The women given solvable puzzles ate more grapes than M&Ms, while the women under stress preferred M&Ms. The men ate more of the high-fat snacks when they were not under stress, apparently because the ones who got the easy anagrams had more time to relax and have a treat.

^I am so male then!

And yeah, great, but you still can't get all nutritients you need from fruit.
