thanks, glad you liked them. i'm surprised they didn't include the invention either....i'm sure if it was a man they would have included it...:innocent:

good point!!i totally agree with you.

lacefab,i see a resemblance between hedy lamarr and vivien leigh too.the dark hair, light eyes,an almost "kittenish" grace..both were flawless beauties.
vivien was a much better actress though....at least in my opinion.what i´ve seen of hedy so far didn´t impress me much :innocent:.
but perhaps i´ve watched the wrong films,i don´t know .

i hope this pic hasn´t been posted before:

actually IA with you, Hedy had a nice screen presence but she wasn't a strong actress like Vivien.

Vivien and Hedy are often compared actually physically, yeah, because of the dark hair and light eyes combination......

Don't really think Paulette Goddard looks like her but in that photo I can see what you mean.

She's beautiful but her eyebrows freak me out. She's proof that God does give with two hands.

Did you know that the original idea and patent that led to cellular phone technology comes from the movie star, Hedy Lamarr?

She knew a great deal about weaponry by listening to her first husband, Fritz Mandl, an armament manufacturer. She left her husband when he became increasingly involved in deals with the Nazis and made her way to London, then on to Hollywood.
She'd kept her mind active on what she'd heard about the problems of radio controlled missiles and how easy it was to block the simple signal. She realized that if the signal jumped from frequency to frequency quickly (like changing channels on a TV or radio) and both sender and receiver changed in the same order, then the signal could never be blocked by someone "listening in" who didn't know how the frequency was changing.

In those days before the transistor was invented it was difficult to design a way for this to be accomplished. Composer George Antheil suggested using something similar to piano rolls, from player pianos, to keep both sides in synch. Together, he and Lamarr patented the "Secret Communication System" in 1942. At that time the idea of using the paper rolls was too cumbersome to be practical.

When the transistor did become available the Navy used the idea in secure military communications and when transistors became really cheap the idea was used in cellular phone technology. By the time the Navy used the idea, the original patent had expired and Lamarr and Antheil never received any royalty payments for their idea.

In 1997 she was honored with an award at the Computers, Freedom, and Privacy conference for "blazing new trails on the electronic frontier." Hedy Lamarr died on January 19, 2000.

she was really outstanding:
"Any girl can be glamorous," Hedy Lamarr once said. "All she has to do is stand still and look stupid." The film star belied her own apothegm by hiding a brilliant, inventive mind beneath her photogenic exterior. In 1942, at the height of her Hollywood career, she patented a frequency-switching system for torpedo guidance that was two decades ahead of its time.

Found a few photos of Hedy on ebay...

Which movie of hers would people recommend? I kind of want to see Algiers because I love Charles Boyer, but I wanted to know what others saw and liked.

Hedy is extremely beautiful, but seeing these pictures reminded me of her aesthetic limitations. Her features themselves are near perfect, but the base they sit upon is not. In particular, her forehead is too small (narrow, short and recessive) in comparison to her cheeks, and her face is a bit round for my liking, lending her an unfortunate triteness that undermines her classic beauty and sophistication. Her eyes are also a bit small, droopy and common. Plus they're set too low on her brow. Finally, her features aren't very distinctive.

You can really see the short forehead and round face here:

This picture is absolutely gorgeous, though:

She is gorgeous, just stunning. I havn't seen any of her movies. Can anyone suggest any good ones?

I think that Ava Gardner shares a great resemblance with her too, along with Viviene Leigh.

What a great thread. I always thought Hedy Lamarr and Vivien Leigh looked alike also although I preferred Hedy's looks more because her mouth was more luscious. Vivien had the pursed mouth going.
Even though Vivien was a better actress than Hedy, Hedy was the more intelligent woman IRL and had a happier life which is better IMO.
