Think Hilary Duff's just a goodie-two-shoes for the tween set? She ditches that too-sweet side in the new issue of Elle, taking on her critics in a cover story for the magazine's July issue.
Asked about the fluffy nature of most of her films, she responds, "Um, are you saying my movies are crap?"

Even if Elle doesn't, there's no denying the critics' response — after all, The New York Times' Stephen Holden called her "talent-challenged." "He doesn't really fit the demographic," Duff replied. "So I could really care less. Look at me, and look at where he is — sorry! Would he prefer that I take some super-adult role that is inappropriate so I would have no place to grow? ... Suppose the next thing I did was this super-edgy independent movie where I was pregnant or shooting up. What would that do to my fan base?"
She also has no love for the music critics and radio programmers who dismiss her pop music. "I feel like I do so much," she tells the mag. "And it strikes me that I don't hear myself on the radio. That critics don't really talk about my music. I mean, a song like 'Wake Up' is not for a 50-year-old man with arthritis who doesn't want to get out of bed."

A resounding YES.
I think she has a point remaining loyal to her fan base, but they're going to outgrow her one day and she already looks too old to play the roles she usually plays. And isn't she basically saying, "I don't care if everyone thinks I'm talentless, I'm still getting rich ripping off little kids" ???

But she does look lovely on the cover. I like the big hair. :)

^ , i just was reading on the ontd community and people were talking
about how big headed she sounds, especially when she says to the NY
times writer, "look at where i am and look where he is" or something.
She's just one of those celebs that rides on luck :ninja:

Well, I know she says that she does not want to isolate her fan base, and it is nice that she wants to be true to them, but as the fans grow up, she will also need take on my "grown up" projects. I mean, within no time at all, there will be another "Tween Princess" on the rise.

hahaha i never really liked her too much until i read this - its so true and mature of her to respond to comments like that with the EXACT TRUTH!! her fanbase is very young girls and she's right to stay true to them since they have been so good to her in making her what she is today. and she's definitely right again when she says it would be innapropriate to take on a role where she is pregnant or shooting up, not only would it destroy her fanbase but the critics would have a field day....

anyways - that is my two cents :D

Her body looks kinda weird in the 4th pic in the Elle spread, but other than that it's a nice photoshoot.

My problem with her Elle comments is that she doesn't need to take on a "super-edgy indie role" in order to grow in her acting abilities. A nice drama that's a step from the tweenie movies might help her. I agree with everyone who said that her fanbase is going to outgrow her.

What she's saying is smart but she sounds bitchy. Her fans who will buy this magazine will be insulted by her stating they can't handle her in any other form than her sugar coated self.
