Do you live in fashion Siberia?

I don't live in fashion Siberia ... people are pretty fashion forward over here... but we are a season behind .... like Australia ... so SS05 is just ending over here right now, and we have to wait till December for SS06!

I was terrified to move back to Helsinki after years in London and Paris, but things are getting way better. Before you could only find either the boring (Armani) or tacky (D&G) designer stuff here, but suddenly the variety's improving a lot: Martin Margiela, Tsumori Chisato, AF Vandervorst, Stephan Schneider, Comme, Eley Kishimoto, Peter Jensen, Veronique Branquinho...

Yes and no.

In DC we have quite a few looks. Most of the people in Georgetown fit into the Urban Outfitters/Marc Jacobs look, they have style but not thier own, that's why I stopped going to UO. As well as the girls who wear skin-tight jeans with a shirt and accessories in a range of shockingly bright colors. Then there are the teeny boppers, you know, those girls who can't decide if they're hot or cold so they wear fake Uggs with a pleated denim skirt and a sweatshirt.

There are very few original people and they don't stay that way for long.

In my school it's like a fashion show, I always try to look my best because everyone is always getting new shoes, bags and hairstyles (we wear uniforms so clothes dont matter). Most people are unique but when someone goes to the edge of fashion everyone follows the. For example when I first came Junior year people copied my fauxhawk, Adidas Sambas, messenger bags and wearing a blazer as a light jacket. Now I have to re-invent myself. I got my best friend a pair of lime and pink Converses for her birthday (this was before Converses were HUGE) and I put white ribbons in instead of laces, suddenly everyone has very festive Converses with ribbons in them.

DC is far from a fashion utopia, the only designer stores we have are Versace, Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, YSL and Vera Wang, Im sure Im forgetting maybe one or two. They're not exactly on the front lines of fashion.

What are you talking about having LV,Gucci,Chanel,YSL,V.Wang,an Valentino hardly, counts as fashion siberia sorry:D

I live in Brussels, Belgium, and while we have a whole amount of standard designer brands plus some more edgy ones (think Yohji Yamamoto, Costume Nationale, Ann Demeulemeester, more Dutch designers) it's not exactly fashion paradise. I'm a student, so I don't have a lot of money to spend on shoes/ bags/ clothes, so I mainly buy affordable basics and then try to wear them in unusual ways. Whenever I'm in Berlin I shop in the small trendy stores which have so much more interesting stuff available! I'll wear colorful minis to school over jeans (when I started doing this I got a few wierd looks and "Why are you wearing a SKIRT over JEANS?"). I actually don't understand why people hate A & F so much in the US, I love their basics: fit well and are good for layering - though I guess the logos and head-to-toe dressing could get on your nerves. But anyways, reading all this on tFS has inspired me to be a bit more crazy with dressing, cause I feel I've gotten lazy lately...

I wouldn't say I live in fashion siberia, but most people are stuck on old trends. Uggs with minis, sooo many sparkley bolero/shurgs, just things that need to be put away. Once a trend hits here, it stays and stays and stays.. So for those of us who try to look up to date with the rest of the world, we look a little out of place because we gave our uggs away along time ago.

Chalk up another vote for the Midwest Engineering School group here... It's a curse. Unfortunately, mine happens to be in Indiana so it doesn't get much worse. I walk around daily and see one or two people who actually took the time to get dressed during the day, much less for parties at night. In general, there are about three people on campus that actually recognize what I wear as designer gear and the rest just wander around blindly, just catching on to big trends that were popular in NYC/LA about five years ago.

Without online ordering I would be lost, I couldn't even find Dior Homme when I went home to Dallas for xmas!

I live in the capital of Wisconsin, where people aren't fashion backward, exactly, but they definitely don't keep up. What I really hate is I never have anywhere to wear a great dress. Even if I wore a cute dress at night, I would probably look very out of place among all the jeans and t-shirts.

^ I know how you feel Callidora. So many great things in my closet, but I would stick out like a sore thumb wearing them.

I go to a college of 70% geeky boys.

Most the girls here are overweight, wear uggs, and have NO fashion at all.

I get my motivation from.. I don't know.. just not wanting to look frumpy. And I like looking interesting.

I do. I live near Ft. Collins CO. Crocs originated here and people are proud of it. (Crocs are bright colored plastic clogs) enough said. People live in Jeans and T-shirts here, and if they dress in anything else. It's frilly mini skirts, uggs and hollister t-shirts.

I get the motivation, because i have a crush on a girl and want to make her notice me...

i get criticised a lot, because i'm the only person who wears skinny jeans in my school... and that is not a good thing when everyone else are wearing evisu jeans and so on... They say that i dress way too androgynous :huh:

I love it when guys wear skinny jeans :mohawk:

I do:cry: . I live in a town where everyone talks about everybody so you have to be careful in clothes. That means it´s better wear jeans and t-shirts everyday, at least it´s the normal thing. Most of girls follow silly and unfashionable trends -argentinians fake Converse 'john foos' or got stuck in the same trend for years!
And 'designer clothes' don´t really exists. Only some argentinians teen brands are trendy like 47 street (so tired of the same old stuff of this one) or muaa etc and it´s getting bored
Well i´m not a fashionable person either^_^ . I wear almoast the same classic jeans and my fav t-shirts w/o sleeves everyday so i´m afraid i´m not in right for critizase them:ninja: I feel sooooooo unfashionable in bs as:innocent:

And oh the stores in this city...I visit 3 boutiques and, very occasionally, one department store.Furthermore,I shop online.Shoes are always online...occasionally from ONE shoe store worth walking into.

Every single girl in the streets here is clad by Zara,Mango,H&M,Vero Moda,Only and a few other suspects, none of which are distinguishable from one another.

But anyway it is not the brands that are important.

When I lived in Cape Town and London I was studying; I never bought designer clothes and I still always felt happy about what was available and I always got compliments. There were loads of other girls,non-designer clad, who contributed to a vibrant street image. Here?

I was talking to the owner of the ONE shoe store worth walking into and asking why she had stocked certain Marc by Marc boots and not others. Her reply?

"I can only sell sober, black or brown shoes here in Rotterdam.I have tried to branch out,but the stock remains on the shelves.Sometimes at trade fairs I see exquisite things, but I know that I won't be able to sell them. They want black or brown sensible shoes, even when they go out."

The lady says it all...

I wouldn't say it's siberia, but where I live, it's definitely the fashion Urals.

Not very high fashion, but we have the standard american looks: emo, preppy, vaguely hippy, flip-flops, chino shorts, with a few girls adopting a bohemian look. It's very blah.

My hometown loves the plaid flannel and LL Bean boots. Maine isn't fashion Siberia. It's the fashion South Pole.

i live in a town (a city on paper) where people dress really boring. never tasteless or tacky, good quality materials, no clashing colours or fashion faux pas, but always looking the same. if you see some outstanding outfits you can be sure they are worn by tourists, newly settled or exchange students from japan. before that i lived in a city where everybody took his look to an extreme, some took on the well-known stereotypes (goths, hippies, metal fans, dandies, punks..) but a fairly high amount looked quite creative. the average income over there was much lower so there always were lots of people who looked cheap but most of them managed to make it look cool. i'd love to see the compromise between those two cities.

well i live in Serbia, where ppl basically dont have much money to spend on fashion, but many still do care about it, at least ppl on my uni... Some ppl get 100e per month so they cant really afford shopping at Gucci too often .

It's hard to find inspiration and motivation for dressing well when you live somewhere where fashion is not so cutting-edge. I used to be based in London but moved to Birmingham this year for university. Birmingham may be England's second city but it is FAR from being cutting-edge when it comes to fashion.

Everyone seems to adopt the "I'm a uni student" sweatshirt/jeans look, or the H&M/New Look look. For the first few months of uni, I lived in hoodies and jeans, and flats, until a few of my old friends commented on how sloppy I'd become... I'm trying to make an attempt to care about my appearance again.... but it's hard when some people can't tell fake and real designer bags apart ( not that I can all the time, but i've met people who can't even tell the obvious horribly-faked fakes from the real stuff ), and some people's idea of shopping is Primark.

I admit all this sounds horribly snobby. Being a student, I occasionally slum it like the rest, and have bought one (one!) bracelet from Primark, but that doesn't stop me from appreciating fashion..

Btwn, wearing anything avant-garde or not from H&M/Topshop attracts funny looks here
