How Do You Walk In High Heeled Shoes?

Selene Darkheart said:
That's fantastic advice! You're so right about the shorter steps. I actually just bought a pair of T-strap, satin fuschia pink, close and round-toed stilettos by J-Lo (Wow. a mouthful to say, huh?) I think the stiletto is about 4-4.5 in and I'm definitely finding myself walking "toe-heel" because you're just so high up in the air. I know this is a posting on how to walk, but would you have any idea how to match something to this gorgeous pair?

Hi Selene ! the J Lo shoes sound yummy... not sure I could get away them as an attorney and no longer cute-young but my heart remembers! Anyhow. I would match them with: Pink BabyPhat tank top; low-rise Juicy Jeans; newsboy cap -- preferably white; and bronze Gucci or purple Boucheron sunglasses. Also three or four understated bangle bracelets. Lipstick color: "Sweet" by Lancome. not much other make-up. ... This is a really cute, friendly & fun summertime look.

P.S. my mother was a fashion editor at a big daily newspaper. I am speaking her language to you...

haha thanks for the great advice!! I actually loove love loooove baby phat. what about a sundress color/style? I'm going to be in NY and I want to look the part ;-)

a sun-dress is an inspired choice. perfect! with pink you can of course wear many pastel colors: light grey, beige, light orange or yellow; stripes (if you are thin) or dots (if you are very thin) also work. Just not light green (it's pink's opposite) and NO solid colors like red or orange. Be sure NOT to carry a purse that's the same color as the shoes (too neatsy-proper for such an informal look). Carry a straw tote or one with a logo on it. One necklace. Maybe earrings (though personally I never wear them). Sounds very breezy, but 4.5" stiletto heels nail it down, so to speak, in a powerfully sexy (but not blowzy) way.

I trust my mother (up in heaven, hopefully) is watching me post this, the sort of thing she used to write every day...

Is anyone looking at starting to wear heels? Taking the first step from flats to heels?

I am trying. In fact I made it my goal this summer but I've done nothing about it thus far  I used to walk in heels occasionally until I wore a pair that were ill fitting (I wasn't wearing them with their insoles in) and I fell. I'm trying to work my way back up with some 65 and then 85 and then hopefully 100 will be no issue.

mmm, no, no goal. Any sort of 4" stiletto would be ideal. I generally try to avoid cheap shoes though as my buildup tools because I just don't believe they are well made enough to support my foot properly. I find Jimmy Choo has good incremental sizing on their basic shoes.

haha I wish, but not on the cobblestones. I walk 10 minutes to catch the train, stand on the train for 20 minutes, walk from london bridge station, across London bridge, to another tube station (which takes me 15 min) and then take that one stop. So going up and down all the stairs, all the grating, and all the walking, I don't think I could. I'm impressed with anyone who can.

doing all that walking I'd carry a pair of cute flats in my bag, and just switch to heels when I got there

yes thats what most londoners do. Except not cute flats. Usually it's ugly trainers. English have an obsession with trainers, I've no idea why as the majority are ugmo in a major way. I wear flipflops.

never wear trainers in public! :ninja: its an insult to good taste

I like a nice pair of driving loafers- or like you said, flip flops when It's warm (but not that plastic kind, relatively nice leather ones from Jcrew)

Every now and then I'll see a woman walking down the street, looking completely natural and comfortable in the highest of heels and I wonder, is there a point where one just gets used to it and it doesn't hurt anymore? How do these women do it?!!

off topic... but does anyone know why all they ever wear are trainers. is it cool over there to wear trainers to the BEACH??

Q: DO I WEAR HEELS EVERY DAY?
A: YES except if it is snowing, or raining heavily, or I'm out to a picnic or the like
Q: How high?
A: 4 inches at least, 4.7 inch CL heels preferred, nothing higher than 5
Q: Walking?
A: if the heels are SIZED RIGHT, no problem, I love it. Short steps, move from the hip, love the quiver they give my body. If sized wrong, OUCH
Q: Take flats with you for long walks?
A: Yes, for mud or very long walks. Otherwise I prefer heels.
Q: Any advice?
A: Keep your feet soft with creams. A toe ring is nice. Pamper your feet. High heels are the ultimate foot-pamper.

I'll tell you what my friend told me when I was wearing heels for the first time:

Walk very, very slowly so that you can get used to it first. Walking too fast will give you nothing but trouble. ;)

Yeah I think that to a certain degree, you get used to it. But the determining factor IMHO will be the fit of the shoe. If it's bad, it's going to hurt even however experienced you are.

First, sizing MUST be close to perfect
Second, steps MUST be short
Third, walk begins at the HIPS
Fourth, one does not worry
